Mad discount tip: gives far more than 30% - it works with the 3 for 2 offer @ Lonely planet!

Posted By: jayne, posted 2007/10/13 06:43
Ok, I've just stumbled accross this, so it might be hard to explain, but I'll try!!

Lonely Planet currently have an offer of 3 for the price of 2 on their guide books. While this is fairly good, what's even better is that it works in conjunction with discount codes... namely the one below for 30% off. BUT this appears to give 25% off the total price of all 3 books, not just the two you are paying for....

For example, if you are adding 3 books at $10 each. You'd pay $20 (because of the 3 for 2 offer). BUT if you apply the 30% off code, it would take 30% off the $30, making this a further $9 discount, bringing the books down to $11.

Code = KAYAK30

Complicated - but discount-alicious!! Remember 9% buckscoop cashback on top of all that!!

** EDIT **

Updated with a 30% code thanks to ozpete :)

Rick - it seems to work, but do you want more??

using the offer above but with KAYAK30 - note must use capitals for it to work

I got the following order - to the point of entering my cc details

Egypt Travel Guide AUD $38.95 1 AUD $0.00
    Australia Travel Guide (14th Ed.)(Pre Order) AUD $47.95 1 AUD $33.56
Southeast Asia on a Shoestring Travel Guide AUD $42.95 1 AUD $30.06
    Real Talk Spanish (MP3) AUD $7.50 1 AUD $7.50
Sydney Digital Map AUD $3.00 1 AUD $3.00
SUBTOTAL (excluding shipping) *Inc GST AUD $62.43*
    Shipping AUD $0.00
    TOTAL AUD $62.43

which is 30% off - 3 for 2 and free shipping - well sort of, in this case I had to buy the digital map and real talk spanish to get order above $60 to get the "free shipping" (if you add another "book" you lose the 3 for 2

although I couldn't see how it worked as per Jaynes example, the 3 for 2 comes into play before the 25-30% discount - and the discount is applied per book rather than off the total. Maybe she can give us an example like above to explain
  • jayne2007/10/14 08:27:17
Pete - I tried the 30% code earlier, and it wasn't working..... I realise that because I didn't have it with caps!

In fact, that code makes this better... it works too - the discount seems to be off the total price.

For example, I'll add 3x Australia Travel Guide, which are $47.95 each.

This shows at $95.90 then with the KAYAK30 code, shows at $52.73.

    Here's how they get it:

    $47.95 x 3 = $143.85
    30% of $143.85 = $43.16

    $95.90 - $43.16 = $52.73

    http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/8421/lpnv4.jpg

So for the above example, it is giving $143 worth of books for $52 (plus 9% buckscoop cashback on top of that)

Pete - I hope you don't mind if I update the OP with the 30% code - it gives a higher discount!!

If I did I wouldn't have shared - and its no point starting another Lonely planet thread - you have enough already :D :flowers:

I guess the only difference in our test is that I chose 3 different books whereas you choose 3 of the same, guess I only need to read a book once... sorry could resist that quip :D

Also by adding the digital maps and or Mp3's you can save on the shipping as the order jumps past $60. If you leave it at $52 you will have to pay shipping (about $10 I think)

    hi Jayne,

Just to let you know, you don't get the coupon discount off the 3rd 'free' book,
despite what the web site seems to say. :(

In fact, even my first order confirmation showed the discount for all 3 books.
But they later updated it to discount only 2 books and adjusted the final price
    accordingly.

In my case, the checkout price was $66, but the final price charged to my credit
    card was $75.

That would be interesting with the credit card company - a quoted price then changing after you submit you card details. I can understand an email later says opps wrong price, do you still want to go ahead. but to charge you without your permission I think thats wrong.

and the extra doesnt make sense $66 $83 even at 20%= $66 so how come $75? Did you click on express delivery rather than ordinary??

Rak, as ozpete says, that is not right at all. You submitting an order to them through their website is an offer, further communications constitute acceptance (depending on their T&Cs), and if they have decided to change the price, this would be a counter-offer, which you would have to "accept" before a contract was made.

If that had happened to me, I wouldn't be a happy bunny....

I agree ozpete. I think this sort of practice will eventually come to a head when someone questions it in court.
  • admin2007/10/14 19:30:30
Rak - I'd say you would have a good case for blocking the payment with the credit card co if you want to go to the bother.

Working ok here fairy. In situations like this, I always suggest using a different browser. Firefox / IE / Opera.

this is the message i keep receiving:

  • fairybelle2007/10/14 20:46:40
all i want to do is place a damn order is that tooo much to ask...

Oh BTW what is Visa Delta?
  • rak2007/10/14 21:26:21
Sorry, i should clear things up about my previous post. My initial order
confirmation (w/20% coupon) looked like this:

    (1) Europe on a shoestring - Price: AUD $35.16
    (1) South America on a shoestring - Price: AUD $39.96
    (1) Southeast Asia on a shoestring -Price: AUD $0.00
    Total Purchase:AUD $66.53

Since these numbers don't add up i assumed that some price
correction would take place, and it did. That said, they still should
have emailed me about the price change.

One further question, has anyone figured out how to buy the books
with US dollars but get it delivered to Australia? Looking at the US
prices it seems that it would be significantly cheaper that way.
  • ozpete2007/10/15 01:12:09
Without a coupon the price is $93.90
    With a 20% coupon it's 66.53
    $75 is more like 15% ($73.XX)

Maybe you should use this as a reason to cancel the order and resubmit using the 30% code
  • fairybelle2007/10/15 16:13:45
For some reason the site didnt like my visa debit card, but it worked with my mastercard.... hmmm.... thats never happened before anyway im happy with my purchase
    Thailand's Islands & Beaches Travel Guide 1 25.86
    Bangkok City Guide 1 0.00
    Bali & Lombok Travel Guide 1 25.86

    Im thinking about getting more.....
  • nod2007/10/15 18:11:25
I think Visa Delta is just a card that is from overseas. Not that I am explaining that very well but I am pretty sure that it is eg a US CC that you can use in OZ - Delta are like a middleman company
  • nod2007/10/15 18:12:07

Visa Delta is a UK debit card.... or eftpos card I guess.

    @ rak - I didn't try the US currency... I don't think that's possible.
  • lisss2007/10/15 19:29:00
OK their system seems to be really messed up and so now I'm worried about risking an order if they'll just charge my cc extra...

Scotland Travel Guide AUD $34.95 AUD $24.46
Lonely Planet Bluelist: The Best In Travel 2008(Pre Order) AUD $34.95 AUD $24.46
One Planet (Hardback) AUD $24.95 AUD $17.46
    Signspotting 2 (+ FREE Signspotting 1)(Pre Order) AUD $19.95 AUD $0.00

They say that the total comes to AUD $60.39*
but if you add up the above numbers it actually comes to $66.38

Raz, were you charged the equivalent of $66.38 or where u actually charged more than that?
  • jayne2007/10/15 19:51:07
@ lisss- that is right, according to the figs I've shown before - it's giving the 30% on the cost before the 3 for 2 offer. But this is a serious issue with their checkout - they cannot quote one fig there and then decide to change it later.
  • nod2007/10/15 20:12:44
they cannot quote one fig there and then decide to change it later.

If they contact you via email after and advise of the change in charges this is ok but not without giving you the option of cancelling your sale before they charge you the increased amount

You're not the only one! :) I'm going to Singapore first though, then using one of the Tiger 99 cent fares over to Bangkok!

    Sounds great guys :)
Christmas is always more relaxing when you are away :D
  • nod2007/10/22 17:30:44
It appears that the LP checkout system is not working very well and people are being charged the full amount on their CC without discounts.
This is not particularly good as LP are not contacting people before their CC is charged - something that they should be doing before they put through a final confirmation for the sale

So I have expired the deals - the 40% off code as well.
If anyone receives any more information from LP about their purchase it would be great if you could pop a comment up in here
  • fairybelle2007/10/22 18:16:23
When I did my order it was $48.XX then i got the tax invoice with the goods and it was $57.XX... Not impressed.
  • nod2007/10/22 18:31:10
The really odd thing is that LP must know that they need to contact you before they charge you CC if the amount you were 'quoted' is different to the amount that you are going to pay.

Marked this as expired as LP do not seem to be honouring the code
