Hong Kong/China web sites - various deals and discounts

I thought that it might be an idea to have a list in one location of the most common/popular websites providing cheap gadgets etc, generally sourced directly from China and (usually) with free shipping. Where there's a special at the moment, I'll add that in.

When buying stuff from them be aware that shipping can take a while, if you buy more than one thing at the same time, it may take longer as the goods will frequently be held for a while until all items are available to ship. Items that look like a name brand, or even have a name brand logo on them may be the real thing (many of these are made in china and sometimes the factory has excess), or they may be rejects, or they may be knock-offs. If you assume that they are knock-offs then you won't be disappointed. If they turn out to be genuine, then bonus.

With many of the sites, you accrue points on purchasing items, and eventually can use those points to buy other items.

http://www.dealextreme.com - probably the 'daddy' of them all. 10% discount on selected items for facebook fans.
http://www.buyincoins.com - 10% discount coupon: 10%eBay110 (found by kickling).
http://www.focalprice.com - 'lightning deals' at http://www.focalprice.com/lightningdeals.html, 'combo deals' http://www.focalprice.com/combodeal.html, discount http://www.focalprice.com/SpecialDiscount.html, and clearance http://www.focalprice.com/SpecialClearance.html
http://www.ledshoppe.com - Use the code "FACEBOOK" during checkout to get FREE LED KEYCHAIN per item. If you buy 1 item, you will get 1 LED Keychain for FREE and so on.
http://www.dinodirect.com - sign up and get $1, get discount. Possible extra gift if 'like' them on facebook.

Some others I know of - may be deals with them as well.... no doubt there are other sites also!

http://www.tomtop.com
http://www.qualitychinagoods.com
http://www.gadget-asia.com
http://www.chinabuye.com
http://www.dragonext.com
http://www.tinydeal.com

Sites where free/global shipping may be available:
http://www.meritline.com (Check for the flags within the item description and/or search for "worldwide shipping items")
http://www.dhgate.com (standard shipping usually included, although sometimes not - in particular with larger items)
http://www.gamesyeah.com (*some* items include shipping)
http://www.sourcingmap.com (currently offering free shipping.... may end soon or be extended...)
http://ahappydeal.com/pt-freeship.html

Sites where you have to pay for shipping
http://www.uxcell.com (AUD$7 for first item, $3 for each extra item, insurance extra $5)
http://www.uxsight.com (cost varies, but usually something like $5.50 for first item, and $2.50 for additional)

I use Meritline quite often (http://www.meritline.com/)

They have coupons in their emails which are very good. I got two USB cables for $1 delivered the other day.

Note: The items have to say worldwide shipping, because they have a US distribution centre as well. You can find this in the "Specials" -> "Worldwide Shipping Items" or in the coupon emails it will say "This item ships internationally".

Cool. Hadn't seen that one before... the mixture of some items world, some not could be a little confusing so would need to be careful with that I guess, but nice one. Will add to the list!

FYI - Chinese Lunar New Year is 3rd Feb 2011, so if you do order anything in the next week or so from most of these sites it is quite possible that things will take a little longer to arrive ie most places (the websites and/or their suppliers) will be shut (or be understaffed) around the week starting the 31st of Jan.

I just read the reviews on http://www.meritline.com/ and unfortunately there seems to be a lot of unhappy customers. Many people said the items didnt work or weren't delivered. This is disappointing and I wonder if they are isolated incidents??

Hard to say. With some reviews I've seen people complain about goods not arriving, but frequently only after a few weeks or even days after ordering. Many people used to deliveries from Amazon taking only a couple of days (or even overnight), don't understand that these places work in a different way and 4 or even 6 weeks is not unusual - in particular if multiple items have been ordered at the same time. Also keep in mind that these sites are very popular and process a *lot* of orders - so it's only to be expected that the biggest sites would also have the greatest number of people who have had issues.

As for goods not working, yes this definitely can happen. Sometimes items might be made to, let's say, less exacting tolerances so might need a bit of wiggling to get 'em to fit/work - but sometimes they might simply be duds. Businesses who import goods themselves will bring in some samples to confirm the build quality etc, and then work on the assumption that there will be a percentage that will be DOA and work all that into the final price they pass through to the customer. As an individual, this is one reason why the goods are a fraction of the retail price. If you are unlucky (eg you get a DOA), then you have the choice of simply going 'ah well' or going through the return process. I don't know about meritline as I haven't used them, but I understand that dealextreme are pretty good in that respect.

When a usb car charger for an iPhone costs $3 delivered that in the shops would cost $20 or more, or for less than $3.50 gets you twenty watch batteries that in the shops would cost you that much for one battery, or if there is something you simply can't buy in the shops around here, well even if you do get the odd rotten apple I think it's still worth the risk!

Another one is Dhgate.. I would say they are ok if you want knock off stuff, its like a trading site, lots of different companies selling their goods.
One good thing is that they have a payment security system where you pay through paypal and DHgate only releases the money to the seller after you receive the goods.
I have had certain instances where i wasnt 100% happy with the quality so you can just go through the process of filing a dispute, I have received partial refunds.. All in all I think its pretty good..

Anyone ever got anything that didnt work from Dealextreme? If so, what did they do? I just got some headphones and only 1 ear works. Am going to contact them about it but I want to check the other pair I got first, which is at work.
