Get Wines Direct - Colonial Estate bargain sale is back on again - worth a look

There's the usual blurb associated with this lot of wine... failed export winery.. in liquidation blah blah blah...

I usually ignore that sort of marketing crap but checked the price on a few of these wines after reading the bit on that top one ranking up with Penfolds Grange.

The original price they are displaying is still relatively accurate - i.e what your paying overseas is what Get Wines Direct is showing (mostly).

I'm not surprised they have limited purchase to one case per customer. The list of available wines is below. They're either available on pre-order or already there. Some show not available when you click through but its probably worth calling as I think thats associated with them being pre-order.

** 08/11/10 Deal is back on again with the following wines.

If you missed out on this amazing offer, they are now offering the 2006 vintage of Colonial Estate Exile Shiraz which, they say is even better !
James Halliday reviewed this wine 95/100. Preorder for dispatch Fri 27 August.
Their guarantee is great, can try 2 bottles out of a case and if not happy with the quality can return free of charge (they collect) for 100% refund.

After a bit of research on the wine, and finding only great reviews, I bought a case, so I'm hoping this wine lives up to the hype! Here's a review I found:

Colonial Estate Exile 2006 From a single block of land within Nuriootpa once eyed by Dave Powell. Shiraz with a splash of Grenache and Mataro. Dark ruby colour with a blackish crimson sheen. Gentle floral notes of purple flower, wafts of prune, red currants, stewed black fruit and sweet leather. A silky, full-bodied wine plum flavours with a dab of espresso at the end. A complex wine one you absolutely need to sit with for hours and ponder over. Let it evolve for 5+ years, then enjoy until 2025. 97-98/100. Tasted March 07http://www.terencepang.com/SAwines.htm

They've even got the 2005 vintage Emigre, which is just one point lower than the 2002 cult wine listed here http://www.langtons.com.au/Wine/Cult.aspx.

I can see the Exile Shiraz page - is there another general roll up page listing the rest ?

They have sold their last bottle of 375ml Emigre 2005 yesterday at about 5pm (the last time I checked).

Their 2006 Emigre is also sold out today.

Apparently there's another 5% discount to it if you are a member of one of their partnerign clubs, which is quite a lot if you buy a case of Exile and Emigre each the saving would be around $33.

P/S: The Exile needs some serious handling and decanting.

P/S: The Exile needs some serious handling and decanting.

    How come ?
  • Kensington2010/11/09 18:53:48
For this particular wine (Exile) I strongly suggest the use of a decanter.
Basically the more you move/shake the bottle, the more hours you need to let the sediment to settle.

My mate was hosting a dinner so I carelessly carried the wine to his place.
Bad mistake, we've obviously overlooked the pedigree of the wine itself since the $29.99 price tag was so ordinary.
I had my first bottle with my mate without a decanter, and by the time we poured the first half of the wine, sediments are seen at the bottom of the bottle neck (not counting the sediment at the bottom of the bottle and those poured into our Riedels).

Towards finishing the wine, the sediment could still be clearly seen stained at the bottom of the bottle neck, though a bit more washed down by the pouring, that's how stubborn it was.
I dont know why, perhaps they have tilted the bottles in their cellar for storing, whereas I placed them straight up all the while.

Lesson learnt: Don't judge a bottle of wine by its price.

    :) - was it good wine ?
  • Kensington2010/11/09 19:28:02
Yeh it was good, hence the reason why I refrained from putting up a new deal post.
As people who are following up with this religiously will know anyway.

They are still dribbling out some of the Colonial Estate wines. At the moment they have

The Colonial Estate Expatrie Semillon Cleanskin 2008 for $6.99 a bottle
The Colonial Estate Expatrie Semillon Cleanskin 2005 for $5.99 a bottle
And the The Colonial Estate Enchanteur Grenache Rose 2007 for $7.99 a bottle.

Good wines at a bargain price. You need to look through this list for the links.
  • Kensington2011/03/15 16:59:47
Apparently the 2009 parcel of The Colonial Estate Exile Shiraz is up for bargain again.
They will be released by the same distributor get wines direct sometime in mid May.
This should be a good heads up for u guys to start saving and live a bread and milk life till then.
