Buy a Virgin Mobile $29 recharge voucher, and you can get a Nokia 1800 mobile for an extra $1. It's locked to the Virgin/Optus network (can unlock it after topping up with $80 or more), and it's a fairly basic 'phone (fm radio, torch, speaker phone - but no bluetooth, mp3 playing, or camera)... but then again, it can be the "spare" or perhaps given to a kid.
Normal price for the 'phone alone from Virgin is $29.
Get two of them, a couple of $15 "long expiry" prepaid recharge vouchers, and two kids can sms each other as much as they like (probably mainly complaints about their cheap parents giving them these and not iPhones like all their friends have) for free for 6 months....
