The Top iPhone 6 Alternatives For Non-Apple Fans

One thing that deters many people from Apple products are the many limitations they impose. This can include things like limiting an iPhone's communication with other devices to only using Bluetooth, or that apps can only be downloaded from iTunes. This in my eyes defeats the point of new technology, which should be designed to improve our lives - not restrict it.

There are plenty of other smartphones on the market, powered by the Android operating system, which offer many of the iPhone 6's top features; such as HD cameras, beautiful design and high-speed performance. In numerous cases these alternatives are not merely alternatives either, but rather a more superior choice. So if you happen to be in the market for a new flagship smartphone but the iPhone 6 just doesn't float your boat, then here's an overview of some of the top alternatives available.

Every mobile phone manufacturer has a flagship device, Apple’s currently being the iPhone 6. By flagship I mean the company’s best looking, most powerful and hopefully top selling product above all others. Considering Apple's phenomenal success with its product range during the last 10-15 years, you'll may find it interesting to see just how many of the following devices come with better screens, more powerful cameras and faster processors which, to some degree, make the iPhone 6 look weak in the smartphone market battle. So, without further a due, the best of the best alternatives are:

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

3,585,900 more pixels than the iPhone More expensive
16MP camera vs iPhone’s 8MP Single day batter life
RAM: 3GB vs iPhone's 1GB
USB 3.0 vs iPhone's USB 2.0
Standby 20 hours vs iPhone's 10 hours
Double curved screen

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is a very powerful phone and competes directly with Apple in the top tier of smartphone technology. Samsung phones represent the largest group of Android users in the world, across hundreds of their devices, but the flagship is the Galaxy S6 Edge. At the annual Mobile World Conference, Samsung devices always manage to generate huge crowds and massive excitement.

The S6 Edge is the most technologically advanced phone on the market in 2015 with curved screens and massive processing power packed inside. It has the sharpest screen with the most pixels compared to the iPhone but of course this all comes at iPhone prices. Other cool tech features include the phone's powerful 16 megapixel camera, fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor, infrared TV remote built in and of course the double curved screen.

HTC One M9

Beautiful brushed metal casing Camera is worse than iPhone's
Smooth functionality Only minor changes from previous model
Full HD resolution Single day battery life
20MP camera vs iPhone’s 8MP
1,073,100 more pixels than iPhone

HTC One M9 Mobile Handset

The HTC One M9 has been a huge hit in the market and a device that many mobile enthusiasts get excited about. The beautiful brushed aluminium casing makes the phone one of the most visually appealing on the market and with its curved back, it’s the best fitting phone when held in one hand. To match its exterior appearance, HTC also ensured that it kept its interface very clean and light too.

The one feature that lets the HTC One M9 down is it’s below average camera. The 20-megapixel snapper they use sounds great on paper, but when you drill down into its specifications the quality of its components are far worse than either Samsung's S6 Edge or the iPhone 6.

Sony Xperia Z3

PlayStation compatibility Sony Apps aren’t massively useful
Ultra-thin, light & water resistant Average camera quality
38 days standby time Internal memory only 16GB
Two day battery life
1,073,100 more pixels than iPhone
3GB RAM vs iPhone's 1GB

The Sony Xperia Z3, like the HTC, has been kept very clutter free to ensure the operating system is fast and smooth. There are also minor changes to the basic Android operating system so the updates and overall OS size don’t consume too much battery or internal memory.

The negatives for this phone are that manufacturers like Samsung, HTC and LG spend a lot of money on customising the basic Android operating system to be unique. Sony don’t spend nearly as much resulting in the Xperia Z3 looking quite similar to more basic Android devices, which detracts from its exclusive and premium feel.

However, its unique PlayStation feature allows you to stream PlayStation 4 games direct to your mobile phone meaning you can play games remotely. Another unique feature is its water-resistant casing, making underwater profile pictures / selfies much more fun.

Brilliant 16MP camera 15 days standby time
8MP front facing camera Much large than competitors
3,585,900 more pixels than iPhone
3GB RAM vs iPhone's 1GB
32GB internal memory
Leather or metal casing
Up to 2TB SD Card

LG G4 Mobile Handset released in June 2015

LG are renowned for making high quality tech products across a range of markets, but many people still struggle to recognise their dominance in the mobile phone market. The LG G4 is a fantastic looking phone with a brilliant camera and the second most powerful display next to the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Its powerful quad-HD 5.5inch screen has a huge 534ppi, which is 62% more pixels per square inch compared to the iPhone.

The leather casing option is a refreshing alternative to have in the market with a choice of two colours, but because the phone was only launched in June 2015 it’s difficult to say how well the leather will age just yet. But, top marks for application. Online reviews have stated that game lag has been experienced and applications have suddenly shut down randomly, although these appear to be individual cases at this stage and not a widespread issue. This may show LG’s Android customisations could be a little clunky occasionally but its not the end of the world when you consider the whole package that this premium smartphone has to offer.
