Tuning in to the iTunes Gift Card

In an age where it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find the time or inclination to rummage through tonnes of options for a thoughtful gift, convenient products like the iTunes Gift Card are heaven-sent. Not only is there virtually no effort on your part, but you still convey that all important aspect of “thoughtfulness” when it comes to the act of giving a gift. And with iTunes’ gigantic selection of content (movies, songs, games, apps, books and more) for many recipients it’s as if Christmas has come early.

However, people who buy these gift cards don’t only do so for the purpose of giving gifts to others though. Many keep an eye on newsletters or special offers from particular retailer’s in the hope of snapping up a discount on iTunes gift cards purely for their own use too. With deals of up to 50% off it’s a great way to buy content for less without having to rely solely on promotional prices appearing within iTunes itself. So it pays to know exactly where the best places to look for iTunes gift card offers are and also which levels of discounts you shouldn't hesitate on taking advantage of immediately (as some only surface one or twice in a year).

Where to buy iTune Gift Cards

iTunes Gift Cards Stockists

The majority of big-chain retail stores carry iTunes gift cards in some form. This includes chains like K-Mart, Harvey Norman, Dick Smith, Woolworths, Coles, Big W and Target. You’ll also find offers for these gift cards referenced on deals and bargains sites like Buckscoop, or speciality stores/websites like giftcardsonsale.com.au.  Monitoring these sites makes it far more likely to spot the really good offers as the sheer volume of daily marketing/promotional messages from the larger chains means it's easy to miss out on individual iTunes offers.

Finding the Best Deals

iTunes discounts and dealsIn terms of which discounts are frequent and which are not, I’d say anywhere from 15% - 20% are not that hard to find. My research suggests that there are usually 4 or 5 offers available during any given month at this level across the major stockists of iTunes gift cards. For discounts of 25%, you’re probably only likely to see these once or maybe twice per month. While the 30% - 50% off discounts usually only surface a couple of times throughout an entire year, except perhaps around the holiday season period. Actually, the lead up to Christmas is one of the best times to purchase iTunes gift cards. Their massive popularity makes them a highly sought after gift causing all major stockists to heavily promote them around these times using competitive pricing in an attempt to outsell their rivals.

The most common cards come in $10, $15, $25 or $50 denominations. Take note, however, that retailers often tend to bunch up their offers, meaning that to get 25% off you would usually need to buy say two $20 gift cards (for example). This is usually the case for deals that offer 20% off or more.

The T&C’s of iTunes Gift Cards

It’s worth noting too that all gift cards come with an expiry, which is generally two years from the date of issue or last activity on your iTunes account. So not a major concern but a good idea to be aware of this nevertheless. Especially if you're lucky enough to have a few unused cards lying around. However, you may only use gift cards within the same country from which they were bought. So if your uncle in the US buys you an iTunes gift card, it won’t be valid for making purchases from your Australian iTunes Store account.
