I guess WD's logic is that you already have your stuff stored on a heap of other sources and drives, but I cant help thinking that if buying a media drive I'd be looking for something with its own HDD.

Its as you say aimed at guys like me with lots of ext storage, the other thing to bear in mind is that media files are getting much bigger now with HD so a 1TB drive will quite soon be full if you also have your back catalogue of movies, songs and family pictures stored, so being able to plug in storage is ideal imo.

these have actually got quite good reviews... they are designed to be a cheap, easy to use and flexible hi-def media player, that you bring your content to on usb flash or hard drive... the WDTV handles a lot of different formats, so it means less messing around (and time) encoding stuff into other formats... it's really not meant to be a full-blown media server... note that it doesn't have an ethernet interface, and it won't play protected DRMed content... here are some reviews, and an interesting thread on the HandBrake forums: http://www.trustedreviews.com/multimedia/review/2008/12/02/Western-Digital-WD-TV-HD-Media-Player/p1 http://www.cnet.com.au/western-digital-wd-tv-339293019.htm http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=7559
