Twinhan USB TV Tuner for Mac (free upgrade to EyeTV 3)

20 December 2008

Twinhan DTV USB Mac HDTV Tuner

An external Digital HDTV tuner with EyeTV 2 software for the Mac. Can be upgraded for free to EyeTV 3 here:

http://services.elgato.com/eyetvupgrade/index.php?file=nocoupon&lang=en

Apparently you need to scan your receipt to prove purchase to get the upgrade.

Clearance sale. Reasonable shipping charges (cost $12.70 to Tas).

Although that's not cheap by Windows standards for the tuner, EyeTV 3 by itself is $81 for an upgrade and $162 outright! Far better than any Windows TV software I've seen (except maybe Media Centre).

The tuner also works on Windows computers (but doesn't come with Windows software).

I'm getting it just for EyeTV.

sounds like a good deal! lots of info and comments on this tuner stick (including the free upgrade to EyeTV 3) here: http://forums.mactalk.com.au/33/59600-twinhan-tv-tuner-question.html it's tempting me to buy one even though i really don't need it... there is a suggestion in that MacTalk thread that the stick is so cheap because the company is no longer going to support Macs... this may or may not be an issue with firmware upgrades (or lack thereof) but at the price you can't go too far wrong...

I've had Mac TV tuners for at least 5 years and never had a firmware upgrade. The only thing that you might ever want to update is EyeTV and even that is for features, not to make it work with later Macs or Mac OS. I'd say it is cheap only because Twinhan aren't selling Mac tuners any more. BTW, it's amazing how many different tuners work with EyeTV now. I just got a new Terratec diversity one off ebay for $70 (bargain) which works on Mac and Windows.

ha ha unfortunately i'm good at remembering numbers... i never even need to open my wallet! it is a good deal but... i've bought one, and i don't even have an aerial connection anywhere near my office/studio/study... anyone got any experience with these kind of tuners and those little indoor aerials???
  • ozpete
well they do say its more for outdoors - I need high pole aerial for good reception with TV so my experience with the "indoor" aerial was not good. Guess depends on your overall tv reception. You know the "indoor" aerial will work on your regular TV so that way you can do your own comparison

what i'm wondering about is any experience with different model indoor aerials (e.g. the kinds you would find at Dick Smith)... the little whip antenna that comes with the Twinhan is about as effective as your average swizzle stick, in fact i get the same reception with a cocktail umbrella green olive combo... i just don't want to waste money on a string of crap indoor aerials...

is there such a thing as a good indoor arial ?
  • ozpete
Yep there is but it just depends on where you are. No aerial - no reception. Good reception area - the indoor works fine. Bad area - no indoor aerial will work!!! For Fishmonkey - if you can borrow a rabbit eared indoor aerial and you get reasonable reception - albeit with maybe sometimes having to move it around, then one of the more elaborate indoor aerials should work. One source of these more elaborate types is ebay with sometimes the 99c bid $15 shipping "bargains"
  • fishmonkey
thanks for that info... do you know if it is worth getting an indoor aerial with an active (powered) signal booster? or is that just marketing hype?
  • ozpete
The signal booster can work. I use one with my external aerial. Without it, the reception is not as good. Now this can depend on the quality and design of the booster - that is something I don't have expertise on - sorry
