22 August 2008

Ever wanted a cheaper iPod or iPod Touch but were afraid to buy a second hand unit? A refurbished/reconditioned unit is the answer + these come with 1 year Apple warranty. Discount off retail varies - see web site.

Sometimes there are extra specials as well on these models - it depends on the time of year. Stock changes so you need to visit the site regularly.

Apple Certified Reconditioned Products

(1) What are Apple Certified Reconditioned Products?
Apple Certified Reconditioned Products are pre-owned Apple products that undergo Apple's stringent refurbishment process prior to being offered for sale. These products have been returned under Apple's Return and Refund Policies. While only some units are returned due to technical issues, all units undergo Apple's stringent quality refurbishment process.

Each Apple Certified Refurbished Product:

* is fully tested.
* is refurbished with replacement parts for any defective modules identified in testing.
* is put through a thorough cleaning process and inspection.
* is repackaged (including appropriate manuals, cables, new boxes, etc.).
* includes the operating software originally shipped with the unit and the custom software offered with that system. See each products "Learn More" for more details.
* is placed into a Final QA inspection prior to being added to sellable refurbished stock.

Refurbishment procedures follow the same basic technical guidelines as Apple's Finished Goods testing procedures.

(2) What should I expect when I purchase an Apple Certified Reconditioned Product?
* Substantial savings
* A fully functional unit with complete documentation
* The assurance that the unit meets Apple's premiere quality standards, and that its defective components have been replaced by genuine Apple components
* The risk that your unit may present minor cosmetic imperfection, such as scratches, marks, discolouration, etc

(3) Can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan for my Apple Certified Reconditioned Product?

All Apple Certified Refurbished Products are covered by Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty. For extended coverage, you have the option of purchasing the AppleCare Protection Plan with your Apple Certified Refurbished Product. The AppleCare Protection Plan extends the complimentary coverage on your Apple Certified Refurbished Product to up to three years of world-class support for Mac, and up to two years of world-class support for iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV.

    stevehl - this is more tip than deal. It'd be a deal if you had picked out a particular unit off the apple site. Its still an interesting topic though. I know a few people that have bought refurbs and I've bought a couple for others. So far, zero complaints and zero problems. I'd vouch for the fact that they tend to be good quality - at least those on the apple site do. I dont know if I'd get one from anyone other than the manufacturer though. Price wise you've got to watch them. I've cross priced refurbs on the apple site against the new units at other stores and in quite a few cases the new price at an external distributor will only be marginally more than the refurb price. When apple list the 'new price' next to the '% discount' they obviously take the price on release not the current market one. Because of that I tend to just instantly forget anything listed with a discount value less than 18%. The majority of stuff they list on there is usually ok value but not wow. Keep an eye on the site though as every once in a while they put a batch of stuff up with discounts in the range of 30-40% - they're the ones that I reckon are worth buying.

    The iPod classics 80gb are an ok price at $229 delivered. (29% discount) Looking at $300 for a new one.

    The current generation 4gb iPod nano for $129 delivered (36% off) is a really good buy too To get to the refurbs, click through to the store and scroll down the menu on the left handside to very near the bottom

    Agreed in that the iPod Classic 80Gbs are pretty good value at the moment. You won't get better elsewhere and the quality of them is excellent. Also, if you want a cheap MP3 player for the go, the Shuffles at $48 in all colours is a pretty good deal. That's when you consider that buying Apple iPod branded earphones are $48, why not get a free MP3 player for that as well?

    48 bucks for earphones..... ! There's some days I wonder if I'm the only person in the world who doesnt have an ipod.

    thanks everyone - yep I agree its a tip as I was going to buy an refurb iPod from eBay. Dealer said he bought a "batch" from USA and so they had 8-10mths warranty. It is good to hear some great feedback from people who have actually bought a refurned iPod. This all started when my coworker's son took his iPod Classic swimming (in the loo). Decision - fix or buy a new one???? Now I need an iPod iTouch to run some software...

    Looking at the 8gb Nano at Dinosaur Deals for $209 which is one of the cheapest prices around, the refurbs on here for $189 delivered are a great buy :)
