Get up to 75% off 4* & 5* hotels w/ lastminute.com.au!

2 April 2007

I'll post this in case you haven't heard of it. For a while now, lastminute.com.au have been doing this "secret hotels" thing - where you book a hotel of a certain star rating. You're not told exactly which hotel it is until after you have booked, but you're getting about 75% off their regular prices! May sound strange, but if you're not fussed exactly where you are staying, it can work out an excellent deal!

Click the link to read a bit more about it.

this sounds like a little bit of a play on priceline - almost - if you stretch your imagination far enough

Yeah it's similar to priceline - without the name your own price bit but with the randomness of which hotel bit. I think you can read the description of their secret hotel though to get an idea of which one it is (if you compare to the other descriptions?).

I would be cautious about the 75% off, I did a quick check of the prices - eg compare another 4 star and the prices were not as good as they advertised. But this was at Xmas so maybe the prices are a bit better now :)

Does anyone know whether the 'secret' hotels are actually nice ones or just 4 & 5 star by name ?

Well, I'm off to Europe myself so I took the plunge and went for a secret hotel in Paris (they do them all over the world apparently), but I really won't be able to answer your question until July admin!! I don't know when they tell me which hotel it is though... I'll have to find out before I go!!

Well I have seen some feed back and some say yes and some have said that they are not quite up to the star rating they had received. But that is hotels generally isn't it. My conspiracy theory side tells me that they may be the hotels that don't normally get booked.. but could be wrong But one thing I will say is that the Mystery hotels prices are still listed as FROM, so you also need to be careful when you are given the final price

Forgot about this thread! That hotel...er... it was a bit of a story. We had just been in a 4* hotel in Budapest, which was the height of luxury, so moving to a 4* hotel in Paris was a bit of a shock. When we arrived, we were given a room which was grey and small. I mean there was about half a meter of space to walk round the small double bed. Me and my partner are quite tall, and the bed felt so small, as we have a king size bed at home. There was mould in the shower, and the shower head was made from nuts and bolts and the jets of water came out through the bolts. After one sleepless night, I realised I could not stay in this for another 5 days.... so somplained to management. They said that was the biggest bed that they had, but what they could do was put us in a twin room, and put the twin beds together and make it up with sheets, so it was one bed... But they couldn't do that until the next day. SO we spent another night in the crappy room, then moved. It was like going to a different hotel. The room was about twice the size, as was the adjoining bathroom. It was mould-free and had a proper shower head! So we were much more relaxed, in there, for the last 4 days of the trip. But I will definitely not be receommending or returning to that hotel.

You'd think four star in paris would be good quality. Probably got the star rating 30 years ago and havent done anything since then. Four star on price, one on quality.

We went on a group tour around Europe staying in 4-5* hotels. Basically we got to sample a whole lot of hotels that we wouldn't otherwise be able to afford because we were booked in at dirt cheap group rates. The difference in quality of hotels was amazing. The other thing we learnt was that a good hotel name eg "Sheraton" didn't garuntee a good hotel either. I'm not sure who does star ratings over there but they're pretty much a joke

Yeah lisss, it did seem to vary from country to country. I find it really hard to know when booking a hotel. Even if you look on tripadvisor to try and get an idea, the reviews vary from one hotel being hell on earth, to it also being the best thing since sliced bread!! It's a hard call to make...

What do you think?
