If you get one of these, I'd highly recommend considering also getting a 50mm f1.4 of f1.8 lens (you can get them cheap on eBay) and leave that on most of the time - you have to walk around a bit more to take photos (rather than use a zoom lens) but the photos in general (portraits in particular) will look even better. Why? 50mm on a crop sensor (80mm on a full frame) is a good length for portraits, a prime (non zoom) lens generally performs better than a zoom, and at f1.4 or f1.8 lets more light in so you end up with faster shutter speed, lower grain, etc.... I'd also note that frequently the included kit lens is ok but, let's say, built to a price....
