The Aust govt, through their GreenLoans scheme is providing an energy/environmental audit of your house. Once the audit has been completed you will receive a report detailing up to 10 items that they recommend you do in order to make your house more environmentally friendly and energy efficient (eg, solar panels, rainwater tank etc)

Then after this report, you are able to access an interest free loan up to $10,000 over 4 years to undertake any of the 10 items on the list. (you do have to pay this back)

You have to earn under $250,000, live in and own the home (and have down so for the past 12 months).

Register online at http://www.environment.gov.au/greenloans/ and someone will call you too book in the sustainability assessment. (or call 1800 895 076)

Just got our loan approved. Now we have $10,000 in an interest and fee free loan to pay for our solar panel system. (or awnings, rainwater tank etc)

This is an excellent, but little known program.

Really, the government will give you a free assessment of how environmentally sustainable your house is, and suggest 10 items you can do to make your house more environmentally friendly.

our items suggested were: install solar panels, fit awnings to western side windows, install larger rainwater tank, replace washing machine, replace old fridge, install grey water system

then once approved you go to the bank (listed on their website), and get approved there for a loan of up to $10,000 over 4 years.I estimate this will save us between $1500 and $2000 in interest over the life of the loan (more if rates go up)

Great idea even if you do have to pay the loan back. Its a good way of depreciating the cost of making improvements over 4 years. Hot from me rebekah.

Can you get the loan if you are still paying off your home, or do you have to own it?

They dont do it in my area, which really sucks. We have a population of about 35000 so its not like we are a tiny little town. surely they could of organised a assesor to come spend a week here to do eveyone that interested.

Let me update you little bit about green loan. The energy efficiency and renewable energy functions of the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts were transferred to the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts announced changes to the popular Green Loans Program. These changes ensure the program can meet the strong demand for free home sustainability assessments and aims to help improve the quality of assessments being delivered under the program.
