Western Digital MyBook World Edition 500GB NAS, $179 @ Harris Technology

good price for this cheap NAS (Network Attached Storage)...

connects to your network via ethernet... has gigabit ethernet, but in reality the transfer speeds are nowhere near that fast (actually slower than a USB drive)...

pros: cheap, easy setup...

cons: slow transfer speeds, no UPnP support (so no media streaming), included software is Windows only...

available for pickup at NSW/WA/ACT/VIC/QLD business centres... shipping is $9.19 to Sydney metro, $14.17 to Perth metro...

I need another NAS drive - lost one recently. Why do you say it'd be slower than USB fishmonkey - how do you figure that?

it seems that most consumer-level NAS devices are pretty slow... even though they have gigabit networking, the rest of the device just doesn't deliver the goods fast enough...

it seems to be a bit of a marketing thing to mention gigabit ethernet (which on paper sounds like 125MB/s)...

all the reviews of this unit mention it's rather pedestrian performance... however for a home user that isn't shifting much data around it might be fine...

:) - the huge gap between the marketing blurb behind the individual components and the actual product performance when they're all actually bound together in a device.
