Update 30/6/11

Samsung Galaxy S II 16Gb phone is available online from www.mobicity.com.au (Brisbane) for $769 including 12 month Australia-based warranty. Do a search on Buckscoop for a $25 promo code ie $744 and $8 Buckscoop cashback (only with the link via Mobicity)= $736 !. Brisbane folks can save on freight ($13 extra) by picking up their orders from Mobicity's Office in Fortitude Valley. Prices are changing so keep an eye out. Mobicity offers Fedex tracking on their orders so you will always know where your order is. (My phone was shipped from Hong Kong).

==========
April 2011
Handtec.co.uk is a UK-based mobile phone/electronics web site. Samsung GALAXY S II (Samsung GALAXY S 2) 16Gb Android OS 2.3 Gingerbread Smartphone - £429.99 + 26.90 DHL freight (2-5 days to Australia) = £456.89 or around AUD $700

- 4.3" SUPER AMOLED Plus AMOLED screen
- This model does not have Near field Communication, or NFC (which will be available in the Australia-released version). NFC is a set of short-range wireless technologies, typically requiring a distance of 4 cm or less. It is used for making payments, reading RFID tags, identity documents, and as an electronic key (eg hotel rooms)
- Samsung Dual Core Application Processor (Samsung's Exynos chip). Dedicated to speed, Samsung 1.2Ghz Dual Core Application Processor is based on Quad GPU and has 3200M pix/s.
- 8MP Camera with LED Flash. Get your shots in. The 8MP auto focus camera doesn't miss any details whether you're shooting idleness or action.
- 2MP Front Camera
- 8.49mm Slim Design
- Network
Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 (ie includes Telstra NextG frequency)
- Connectivity
Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
BT v3.0+HS
USB 2.0 OTG
HSPA+ 21Mbps/ HSUPA 5.76Mbps
EDGE/ GPRS Class 12
- Gorilla glass

Other sites in Australia have listed this phone at AUD$899 (which includes 12 months Australian warranty). (http://www.mobicity.com.au/samsung-galaxy-s2.html - no mention of NFC on their web site. This model is from UK so I assume no NFC.)

The only downside if you buy from UK, is that you need to return the phone to UK for warranty. At AUD$200 cheaper - it maybe worth considering.

These are supposed to be pretty good phones. I've not had the chance to play with one yet.

Will be interested to see how the 'Super AMOLED Plus' screen is like in the outdoors, as standard amoled was fairly ordinary....

I ordered from another UK supplier, and there's still around a $25-$30 AUSD tax to be paid for importing.

Might still be worth it, might not.. Something to keep in mind.

This model has no NFC chip, the one sold in AUS soon should have it. NFC might become important function especially when using it to pay for stuff.

how come you had to pay tax? I assume you are referring to GST? Did you pay at the post office?

@stevehl No, was done online. I dont have access to the entry at the moment (long story) but it was listed, and it was in addition to the total cost of the phone so i assume it was added afterwards. (was not part of the total price at checkout).

Should have more details in a week or two..
