this geek tool allows you to quickly connect most bare IDE/ATA/ATAPI/SATA hard drives and optical drives to your Mac or Windows machine via USB 2.0....

handy if you have a number of bare drives lying around without enclosures, or if you are replacing a drive in your computer and don't have an enclosure for the old drive...

shipping is Aust Post small parcel, which is $6.50 from Melbourne to Sydney...

MacFixit also offer a 30 day money back guarantee on their hardware products if you are unsatisfied for any reason...

You can get these really cheap on ebay if you're happy to buy internationally. I think I got mine for about $15 or $20 including shipping.

mmm, i hear what you are saying... i occasionally buy items that i can get significantly cheaper from a reputable overseas ebay store, but the decision also depends on the kind of item, how long the shipping will take and the issue of warranty handling...

that said, the similar but really really cheap units i've seen on ebay don't seem to have any kind of status displays on them...

i should add that MacFixit offer a 30 day money back guarantee on their hardware products if you are unsatisfied for any reason...

Ha - now thats a smart idea. Even better than a drive enclosure I'd say.

well, as a temporary measure, yes...

Yes very quick for temporary attachment (you need to be careful of the bare drive - static and bumps, also the surface you put it on).

Also it kinda goes without saying that a lot of the things listed on here can be bought on ebay cheaper so I probably shouldn't have mentioned it. Though $20 is a lot cheaper than $65 (and you really don't need the light's to tell you it's plugged in) :-)

They sell a cheapo version of one of these on dealextreme for US 19.50 - about $41. Doesnt look as good as this one though. The more expensive one thats pretty similar to this works out at about $46 delivered.

I see epowermac are selling a version of this for $62. I still think they're a pretty neat idea. http://www.epowermac.com.au/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=882
