    I've never seen this before!

Are the pictures scanned very clear?

Do give me your feedback as mum has a stack of old negatives that I would love to scan and store!

They were of when she was younger, and also when my bro, sis and I were little ones :D All the cute baby photos hehe

Hi. I decided to splash out on this one but I'm having trouble attaching the $10 vouchers. I've tried both codes and it says the codes are valid, but the discount is $0.00. Anyone else had any luck?
  • kam762008/12/08 15:32:24
whoops, just read the fine print - I take I receive a voucher for another purchase, not off this one. Sorry!
  • golfwidow2008/12/08 15:33:49
Hi kam. Its not $10 off it's $10 that will be added to your account later on as a rebate type thing. Does this help at all :)

If you click on the vouchers from opening post it will explain each vouchers terms.

From what I can make out your looking at approximately a 5 megapixel scan size. There's a bit of a print and negative scanning 101 here. Unfortunately I cant find much on the actual Otek scanner to see what other people think about its quality etc.

Some interesting commentary on scan resolution here (if not a little geeky)

Bit of a blurb on why scanning prints to larger format just doesnt work here.

Did anyone else buy this? My computer won't recognise the scanner when I plug it into the USB port. Anyone else have this problem or a way I may be able to fix it. Have reinstalled program, changed USB cords, changed USB ports........

I bought it for my husband and he's having the time of his life. He has boxes and boxes of negatives to go through from the 60s and later. He's been playing with it all day yesterday and today and loves it. Easy to install, easy to use the software and he's extremely satisfied with the copies he's printed out.

Bargainhunter do you have Windows XP?
It seems to be either my computer or I have a dud one
  • admin2008/12/18 17:36:10
Those sort of issues are the scourge of XP golfy. I feel for you.
  • bargainhunter2008/12/18 18:27:10
Yes, the computer he's on is XP. Normally, I avoid buying electricals at DD - the espresso machine, digital photo keyring and something else went back, but DD are great at refunding and hubby *really* wanted it.

He just told me he's about halfway through, so if he gets through the rest, he'll be delighted and will still consider it value for money. The number of negatives he had to go through would have been too expensive to take somewhere.

In two days he's managed to scan through 950+ negatives and the scanner is still going strong.

Process I'd have gone through would be something like this.

Set it all up, run install, find it doesnt detect.
    Abuse Microsoft generally.

Double check I'm not a numptie and trying to install vista drivers on XP.
    Abuse windows.

Complete uninstall of drivers, restart machine, reinstall.
    Abuse nearest human.

Go check manufacturers site / google for updated drivers or better install package. Uninstall, shutdown, reinstall.
Threaten to throw machine, scanner and toys off the balcony.

Probably not much help golfy but that would have been my method.

It makes sense to me to get one. There's a bunch of pictures and negatives of stuff I've done which just never get looked at but I should do something with to get them on computer where they will.
  • admin2008/12/19 08:16:27
Golfy - this is something I've never seen before and maybe worth a try. Not sure how much of a geek you are but it wouldn't be too hard to test it.

PMSL. Are you sure we aren't the same person? This was my methods exactly :D

Tried everything I can find on Google but because it is a nothing brand is hard to find info on it. Will try once more then I will email DD. Very dissapointed as was really looking forward to doing a heap of old slides and negs for family members Christmas presents
  • admin2008/12/19 10:00:28
Check that last link I posted as well. Its not a mend I've seen or tried but unless the machine itself is dead its gotta be something up with your config. The other alternative is to see if you can get it setup on a friends machine to test the scanner itself.

I remember when i looked that there was bugger all on the internet about it. Have a close look at the stickers and manuals etc to see whether its actually a generic version of an otherwise branded machine or whether there is some obscure sticker with the manufacturers name on it.
  • golfwidow2008/12/19 10:14:55
Thanks Admin. Will try above link too.
Only other sticker it has is the Model No. and Otek Filmscan35 I.
Will see if I can find another computer to test it on to double check.
  • admin2008/12/19 10:22:21
have you googled just the model number to see what associated info you can turn up ?
  • golfwidow2008/12/19 10:33:32
Yep and nothing came up for it. Ok am going to shut everything down and start from scratch. Wish me luck!

Ok I found a problem. It tells me something about The Class Installer wont let it work or something. Whatever I have done from installing this thing has also got me an Intel Proset problem or something.

Googling my way through still. Can you tell I have NFI? :xmas7:
  • admin2008/12/19 20:09:41
Where are you getting those messages from Golfy - while installing or post attempt?
  • golfwidow2008/12/19 20:17:05
'The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device'
I get this message when I plug in USB to get the computer to recognise the scanner. Even when I uninstall completely to get it to rerecognise I get the same message. Same when I try to install or upgrade the driver.

Intel Proset problem is when I try to use my control panel etc. Keeps saying resources aren't available.
  • admin2008/12/19 20:24:19
ahhh - the class installer is a common one with lots of people finding something similar with scanners / cameras etc.

I've seen the word re-install bandied around a bit and there's theories that it may come from a trojal on your machine.
  • admin2008/12/19 20:27:04
    Interesting fix from this guy
    http://help.lockergnome.com/windows/Error-message-class-installer-denied-install-upgrade-device-ftopict526858.html

HP's take on the Virus issue
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bpu00740

if you scan and its not a nasty this idea may work
Go to Device Manager and uninstall all your USB - hub and drivers. Shut down computer and let XP or 98 reinstall USB and drivers. After numerous emails to Canon I found this worked for me after the "The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device" message.
  • golfwidow2008/12/19 20:42:13
Tried the first link but didnt help.
Have scanned and nothing showed but Trojans are yucky things.
Ok will try the unistalling the USB thingys.
  • golfwidow2008/12/20 08:10:16
Ok I gave up and had a beer instead last night :)

Quick question how do I uninstall USB thingys? Do I need to work out which hardware I have installed and do one by one or can I do all USB at once?

Thank you so much for your help. Eternally grateful :D
  • admin2008/12/22 23:16:09
Sorry golfy - missed your reply.

My assumption is that you'd need to do one by one but there's probably others around here that are a lot better at telling you how or whether thats a good solution.
  • queenshrew2008/12/23 00:47:16
golfy..have you tried it on another computer? Just wondering if it's your computer or they sent you a dud. What you've been through so far with this device... is definitely scaring me off it for life haha :D
  • golfwidow2008/12/23 15:48:24
Haven't had a chance to try again since I did a thorough cleaning and found some yuckies hiding in my system. Will also try on mums laptop after chrissy to check its not a dud. Hoping it is otherwise I'm stuck with a piece of useless hardware :(

DD is pretty good with refunds! (From past experience).

Hi - I just received one of these today and have exactly the same issue, and I was so excited to get started on the odl slides!!

  • bargainhunter2008/12/24 05:15:54
Don't worry about DD giving you a hassle about refunding. I've had to get 4 refunds (electronics, sigh) and have no complaints about the process whatsoever; it was painless for me.

Good so I am not the only one. I have a different problem now. Installation CD has gone walkabout. I don't think I am supposed to have the work for me. Im taking it as a sign

I received one for Christmas today and I appear to be having the same problem. I will try to send it back to where I got it and get a new one.

Seems a few people are having problems. Same issue where the computer will not recognise the unit so either the whole thing is dodgy or they got a bad batch. Am awaiting a response from DD.

  • tuppence2008/12/28 17:32:12
Same problems here... but I'm on Windows Vista.

I purchased the EU3C model from DD in Nov on 12 mth warranty, but the Otek model they are sellingnow on 30 day warranty looks exactly the same.

I'm wondering whether this is the manufacturer http://www.otek.com.cn/indexen.asp
  • admin2008/12/28 21:59:43
Is there anything on the scanner itself that would link Otek to Microtek who also manufacture optical equip and who also have a product called Microtek Film Scan 35 .....

Can one of you confirm whether this is your driver http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=386273 or even download it and see whether it works.
