IceCube Pleiades Super S Combo external hard drive enclosure $143 @ Epowermac

these are excellent enclosures for putting together your own external hard drives (add the 3.5" SATA hard drive of your choice, up to 1TB)...

fanless, solid aluminium enclosures with eSATA, FW800x2, FW400, and USB connections... they also come with cables for all the above connections...

i already own two of these, and i have another winging its way to me as i type... at $143, these are around $45 cheaper than i have ever seen them anywhere else...

free shipping until the 31st using promo code EXPRESS at checkout... (oh i just realised if they are gonna be picky about the $150 limit you might need to add a little something else to your basket... worth calling them and asking if they'll still do the free shipping if you only want the case though...)

Really nice case. If you miss the deadline for free shipping they're $138 (plus shipping) at Zytech.com.au and others with fewer connection ports cheaper.

hey, good price at zytech too... have you bought stuff from them? are they as good as their testimonials suggest?

I think I might have years ago, but can't remember what. I know they are very well established as a Mac bits vendor. If you only bought the drive it wouldn't be enough to get the free shipping would it (doesn't it need to be $150 worth)?

i know Epowermac is good, i was wondering about Zytech...

i made a note in the original deal about the shipping... from my dealings with them i would be surprised if they were that pedantic about the free shipping if you gave them a call, but that's speculation on my part...

i have now discovered that the latest versions (still the same model) of this enclosure have a different controller board... in the slightly older version, the drive plugs directly onto a connector soldered to the controller board; in the new version there are 2 separate cables for data and power which go from the board to the drive...

and unfortunately there seems to be a fault with the eSATA interface on the new version -- basically the enclosure spins the drive up when the connection is inactive (i.e. when my computer sleeps, is shut down, or in fact even if the eSATA cable is disconnected from the computer!)...

i also have 2 of the previous version, and they work fine over Firewire 400/800 and eSATA...

it has been a great waste of my time tracking the problem down, and i currently have 2 of the new enclosures here... fortunately yesterday i managed to find a supplier with a couple of the older enclosures in stock...

maybe it's a problem with a particular batch, but take this as a heads up if you get one of these to use primarily over eSATA...
