Dick Smith - Canon A490 $98

Pretty decent entry level camera for under $100. Can get this online for less, but then you a) also have to pay for postage and b) it may be a "grey import" with associated warranty restrictions and c) if there is an issue returns may cost you extra versus just taking it back to a physical shop.

I'm a big fan of the A series cameras - lenses tend to be excellent, and using AA batteries means that you can easily get cheap rechargeable batteries for it plus - if you're on holiday etc - if the batteries die it's easy to just get some cheap disposable batteries to tide you over. The A series also tend to be fairly well built and resistant to the odd knock that would cause other cameras to fall apart...

On the flip side, I've always found the ones I've had tend to overexpose on flash and colours are always a touch on the "vibrant" side - basically it's tuned for standard point & shoot photos. This model is not supported by the hacker community (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CameraFeatures) so no raw shooting. There are also some features missing on this camera that other (generally more expensive) cameras may have, like image stablisation, HD video, smile detection (not just face), or even (in the case of the new Ixus line) wink detection allowing you to trigger the camera with a wink!

Anyhow, it's way better than pretty much any mobile around and cheap enough to be almost disposable whilst providing photos that - if not DSLR - are pretty decent. Limited stock so (if interested) check the store availability online (they only have stock in stores, none online, but you can check availability there) to see if there's one in a store nearest to you.

Personal Video Recorder (PVR) with two tuners, and that's still one more than a lot out there. Gives you all those wonderful things like the ability to "pause live tv", record shows with no loss of quality, and skip ads or other "boring bits". Two tuners mean you can watch one channel whilst another is recording - plus it also means if you have two shows set to record on different channels, then if one "runs over" then you can keep recording it without losing the end of one or the start of the other. A nice bonus is if you update it with the latest firmware (not sure if it will come with it loaded, but it's easy enough to update) is it's actually able to record up to four shows (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=86894) from two network providers concurrently. [From the site: The New Topfield TF7100HD PLUS comes equipped with a 320GB Hard Drive with the new Firmware just released, gives the TF7100+ a 'quad recording' feature, meaning you can record up to 4 shows at once, over 2 TV networks, while watching a 5th show on playback. For example, you can record ABC1, ABC2 at the same time as recording Ch7 and 7TWO.. It also boasts Topfield's latest UI (user interface) and can record 3D broadcasts. This "update" version was released for Christmas last year, but still has lots of "bells & whistles". The price drop (RRP was around $900 and now is closer to $749) reflects the increased competition out there - the extra discount indicates a newer version may be due to replace it. This wouldn't worry me that much though - I have an ancient (in the world of PVRs) "Masterpiece" (standard def only) Toppy and it's done a sterling job over the years.... might update to this one to get HD and HDMI support.

320Gb hard drive (not huge, but good enough if you don't record a lot of HD content - if you do, you can always add on an extra 1TB external drive via USB or even better (for higher speed) esata.

Another big advantage - in my opinion - is it's NOT Freeview compliant. This means you *can* skip ads. If you add on an external NTFS drive, I believe you can share/access recordings over your network.

Also supports TAPs (Topfield Application Programs) meaning you can load up all sorts of applications created by the Topfield user community, and can be controlled over the network via a built in web interface

All up, a pretty decent device. The "plus" model was an update to the device released around Christmas last year - bringing in the chip from Masterpiece HD TRF2400 to give it faster channel changing etc. With a subscription to IceTV you can do things like add recordings remotely via the web or even via an iPhone app. Beyonwiz probably has models with more features, and the Tivo is easier to use (although it *has* to have a broadband connection to work), but it's starting to get hard to find non-Freeview crippled/compliant boxes and this is definitely pretty cheap for a PVR with some decent features.

The set can pull down the EPG (Electronic Program Guide) off the air for free, or if you're a geek you can get access to free tv guide data and load that on yourself. If you want, combine with the code 'fathersday' mentioned in another post for a deal on the IceTV service for the EPG. Plus you may get some buckscoop cash back bringing the deal down to $429 or so.... ;-)

*Update* Be aware that there have been a number of reports of reliability issues with the older version of the 7100 PVR. The "plus" update can perhaps be seen to be virtually a new model and I suspect the reliability issues have been addressed with this update.
