Coles - Shop at Coles and Earn $5, $10, $20, $50 or $100 Gift Cards

Posted By: NoosieB, posted 2009/05/17 20:10
Everytime you spend $30 or more in one transaction at Coles (excluding tobacco and Gift Cards), you will accrue "gift card credits" to your Flybuys card. A "gift card Credit" of 0.5 cent is awarded for every $1 spent.

The first thing you need to do is fill out the online registration form. You will need to be either a primary or secondary FlyBuys card holder. If you're not a FlyBuys member, that's ok, you can join at the time of filling out the registration form.

You can shop at these stores:
*Coles, Coles Central, BI-LO, Pick 'n Pay, Coles Express, Liquorland, Liquorland Express store and Coles Online
*Tobacco and gift cards are not eligible for accruing credits
*Excludes 1st Choice, Vintage Cellars, Liquorland Direct and any other FlyBuys businesses

Then, after 31 July, points on your FlyBuys will be converted into Coles Gift Cards, and sent to the FlyBuys cardholder's postal address. (May take up to 60 days).
Credits less than $5 will not be awarded a Coles Gift Card.

You MUST have your FlyBuys card scanned at the time of every purchase to be eligible.

Sorry Tasmanians, this unfortunately does not include you.

This promotion is confusing me because I've read the FAQ when the competition started on the website and this is what it says about earnings gift cards:

Q: How much do I actually need to spend to start earning Gift Card Credits?

A: You will automatically earn one Gift Card Credit for every $1 spent on your entire transaction when you spend a minimum of $30 or more, on any products, across participating stores (excluding tobacco and Gift Cards). For example, if you spend $35 on eligible purchases in one of the of the participating stores you will receive 35 Gift Card Credits.

Q: How many Gift Card Credits do I need to earn a Coles Gift Card?

A: You need a minimum of 1,000 Gift Card Credits to earn a $5 Coles Gift Card.

To me that says I need to spend $1000 to get a $5 gift card..
  • NoosieB2009/05/17 20:53:31
Oops, apologies, I have made a mistake. I worked it out at 5c, rather than half a cent. Will spam the deal as it's not that great now.

Yep, their only upside is that they offer some items which have bonus credits. The terms and conditions that I read weren't clear though on whether these bonus accrued on the purchase side, or to the rewards side.

For example, some are worth $1 bonus credit. I suspect that means $1 on the gift card side (i.e. equivalent of $200 in purchases), but the terms I looked at didn't confirm that. If it's only like you've spent an extra $1 (so you're marked as spending $51 instead of $50 for example) that's virtually useless.

As another downside though, you don't even get any credits if you purchase less than $30. Thus, say you often make $20-40 shopping trips - any of those that are less than $30 will earn 0 credits.

I signed up to this a few days ago and its all really confusing
  • golfwidow2009/05/18 09:53:34
I just sign up and shop as normal in the hope something comes out of it otherwise it just get's too confusing. I have bought a couple of the BONUS $1 items but only what I would otherwise use or I think you would end up spending more money trying to get a higher gift card which kind of defeats the purpose IMO.
  • lilpretzel2009/05/18 10:39:27
I signed up as well and will see what happens.

    :)
  • craftykiwi2009/05/18 17:28:00
Seems a bit unfair if you're not already with Fly Buys that you have to register again and can't just take part automatically when you scan your card. They already have all your details.
Anyway I doubt that in the time frame I'd spend $1000 since I shop at a number of stores depending on which is closer at the time and what specials are on offer.

    We are upto $1.87 lol
  • craftykiwi2009/06/11 18:09:50
And we're up to $3.65. Don't even know how we did that as haven't spent more than $30 very often.
  • kazyazy2009/06/11 19:07:42
I am up to $1 woohoo
  • odysseus2009/06/11 19:43:11
They didn't bother notifying me... but that's probably because I'm probably only around 25 cents. They don't want to discourage me!

Funny how this is over 2 pages, yet only has a meagre 4 degrees... says it all really.
  • lisss2009/06/11 21:43:36
We're up to $8 and didn't try to buy any specials or anything, just did shopping as usual.
  • nlafanclub2009/06/11 21:57:52
Oo-er! Now I feel bad. I marked it as "Cold" & it went below zero - didn't know it would do that  (thought it might take a degree or two off, but....) oops!

Anyways... I never really looked into how they worked out the gift card credits when it started. I just tried to make sure I needed to spend over $30 each time I went in, thinking I'd get maybe 10 or 20 bucks out of it by the end.

Then I got the email saying I'd earned $4.60 & thought "That's all?" And now that I've read what it takes to make just $5 (ie $1000) - wow! That's one of the crappiest promotions I think I've ever seen! I could save $5 (prob. more) every week just by shopping around. I've actually had much, much better flybuys giftcard offers in the past, costing a truckload less money. Seriously poor show Coles!

And that's why I marked it cold. But minus degrees...? er - I'm sure it'll warm up soon :whistling:
  • lisss2009/06/11 21:59:23
I don't think it's cold, its good to know about because if you are like us and shop at Coles anyway, all we did was sign up and we get a bit of $ out of it. We didn't change our shopping habits at all or buy anything especially for the promo. I don't think you'd make much unless you consciously bought the "boost" special items and then maybe you could save a lot, I'm not sure how that works as we werent interested in using it. Something is better than nothing, it just depends how you look at it and use it.
  • NoosieB2009/06/11 22:22:43
Well it's now out of the negative, and a sizzling 5 degrees! This post is certainly generating interest, even though no one is earning huge dollars out of it! :)

You are right about that - something is most definitely better than nothing. I should have thought it through a bit more before I hit cold. In fact, I've always been anti-cold in the past, but for some reason the earning rate on this one hit a nerve. I really do think Coles could do much better, though. Still, no more cold from me

    (I'm so glad it's back above zero :o )
  • NoosieB2009/06/11 23:43:42
Hey nlafanclub, to be honest, it isn't the best deal by Coles, but as lisss says, it's better to get something rather than nothing.

The problem is, for a fair few of us it is still likely to end up as getting nothing despite any spending and effort put into it.

Don't worry, I often vote and then wish I could change it ;) No big deal anyway.

Receive triple Gift Card Credits when you spend $30 or more at Coles Supermarkets and present your FlyBuys card*. It's that simple, for every $1 you spend, you earn 3 Gift Card Credits.

This is a limited offer available to you from Saturday 11 to Sunday 12 July, 2009.

The Giant Gift Card Giveaway ends 31 July.
  • msanchez2009/07/12 17:21:09
I've got a little of $12 as at the last email. What annoys me is there is no way to track it. Logging into the website is pointless.
  • kazyazy2009/07/12 18:43:43
    I had $3.75 I don't even know if I will make $5
  • odysseus2009/07/12 21:29:46
They haven't even bothered e-mailing me with a tally. Guess they think there's no point if you've only got a dollar or so - or don't want to point out how little benefit is gained from the promo.
  • golfwidow2009/07/30 13:58:03
    This is restarting again
Great news! It's back by popular demand. The Giant Gift Card Giveaway promotion starts again from 1 August until 31 October 2009 so you have another three months to earn a Coles Gift Card.

We've made it easy for you, there's no need to re-register.
  • kazyazy2009/09/10 19:56:22
I just got a $5 gift card which was a nice little surprise. I had 4.77 but they rounded it up to 5.00 so I got one :)
  • Diannesa2009/09/10 23:05:03
We haven't got our gift card from the first promo... has everyone else got theirs?
  • craftykiwi2009/09/11 15:34:52
Yes I got mine the other day. A whopping $6. But very happy - every little bonus counts sicne I dont' go out of my way to get it. Just purchase what i normally would anyway.
  • kazyazy2009/12/15 15:59:18
I got another gift card today for $8. YAY. I forgot they were doing it again. :D
  • odysseus2009/12/16 00:02:18
I got a huge $0 despite shopping there almost every week. Knew it was a waste of time.
