There has been a bit of a backlash with COTD and their 'boxes'
Would be great for some feedback if anyone purchases

Forgot to say thanks for the deal post Ravenclaven :flowers:

I've also read elsewhere alot of people haven't ben happy. I've bought of COTD a few times and never had a problem with them. Some nice bagins to be had.

I sometimes wonder when I have read peoples complaints what they expected. A complaint from the xmas box I read from someone was it included a russ scarf and how silly that was etc well it may seem silly but I know we have had cold xmas at times and the point was the box was to a certin value and just cause you don't find the item useful doesn't change the value of the item.

Just one thing though.....COTD usually give rizes to the first so many who post special deals on forums like this. So some forums are having issues with memebers almost killing one another to be the first to post. They might post it quickly to be first then go back and fix it up etc and this is causing all kinds of problems. So don't be auprised if you see members you never saw before posting COTD items ;)

I will have to say that I completely disagree with that idea - ie COTD offering vouchers for people to post up deals in other peoples forums. Not a nice thing to do I think
    SPAM maybe ??
  • Keeys2007/10/12 10:43:31
Hmm I just went to find where it was written and its been removed seems they are smart enough not to leave it up ;)

I did read somewhere it was like 20 boxes to the first 20 to post on public foums. The number varies depending on how much the box of stuff is worth and whats in the box. The baby box a few weeks back they asked people to put on baby/kids forums etc

Anyway just thought I'd put the info out there incase mods weren't awear :)
  • nod2007/10/12 10:59:37
    Thanks Keeys
I guess they have to remove it - don't want too many people to see what they are up to :D

    Hi guys,

I did post this deal because of the comp they were running but I also bought a box first because I thought it was great value.....sorry if that was the wrong thing to do, I'm loving this site so would hate to put anyone offside :o

I have only been a member of buckscoop for a couple of months and haven't had any good bargains to offer so far, though I have used many found on here (loved the snapfish photobooks!!).

I don't understand though how it could be spam when it is a genuine bargain (or so I thought?)

"There has been a bit of a backlash with COTD and their 'boxes'

I purchased one of their jewellery boxes last week but haven't received it yet, will let you know how it goes.....

    Hi guys,

Here's the rub - we're very against self-promotion here, and these kind of promotions from merchants introduce bias into what the members post. E.g. People would post it for the sake of the comp, not because it's a good deal in and of itself.
  • nod2007/10/12 18:12:52
I will certainly second that Jayne

But thanks for your honesty Ravenclan
In the end, if people start to post up these sorts of deals to 'win prizes' or as part of a referal scheme, the forum loses all objectivity. And we designed Buckscoop so that Australian consumers could come to the forum and find deals posted by other consumers, free of bias and advertising hype.
We do not allow advertising or merchant deal posts either for the same reason.
  • ScarletRubies2007/10/12 19:55:30
Well, the Mega Baby Box was advertised here because of a comp, and I had never heard of the site so was introduced to something I was interested in and have since used a few times...*

I am not sure where I stand on the notion of only posting for altruistic reasons - I think if you are honest, declare any interest you have etc, people get to make up their own minds whether to get on board. But then, you could (and we probably do) have people with a commercial interest posting their deals under a different identity or what have you - I mean, how do we know Brad doesn't own Dominos? (Sorry Brad!). I posted links to an Aussie Sale site, made it obvious if you went through on my name I'd get a kickback etc, and still got called on it (fairly, I thought) - but that doesn't stop others posting the same types of deals... shouldn't we just presume people's intentions are honest until they prove themselves dishonest? And buy if we like the deal, ignore it if we don't, and use our chilly vote if we've got an issue? I don't mind if you get a kickback on something if I was wanting to buy it anyway - it's not like you skimmed my Visa.

*After I bought my Mega Baby Box, I gave a review of it's contents (favourable). I also liked the shoe boxes (more because of Jayne's promotion of them! I do have more usable cupboard space now though). I am waiting on my Bad Taste Bears, which I expect to be good quality but tasteless - perfect for my brother. My only issue with COTD is that I have won 3 of their comps (not posting ads but their blog comps) and have yet to receive a prize; communication with their rep was also slow going, but has happened this week.

This one is a difficult one I reckon. I'm always a benefit of the doubt person - so when I read that ravenclan thinks its a bargain, to me posting the deal is fine. Add to that that this forum is for all of you lot to 'own'. Ruby is right if you dont like something vote with your feet and make it loud.

The only reservation I have is that I abhor what COTD is encouraging, which is plain and simple spam. It just simply encourages people to go and throw COTD stuff in people face whether they are interested or not. So now that we know about it we'll have a close look if any of these pop up again and if there's any doubt then it'll be canned.
  • Keeys2007/10/12 22:03:28
I never posted aiming it at the person who posted this offer, I was more making comments incase each time there is an offer we see people posting "just" to get the freebie. I know of atleast one other site thats looking at banning COTD posts due to people never posting on the site except for these offers.

I personally don't have an issue with these being posted except I think the person should be honest in their post and I'd hate to see people only posting when its of benifit to them.

This site works well from what I can see of my little time here because people give and take. I'd hate to see people posting just because it benifits them.

Anyway it seems its been food for thought if nothing else ;)
  • admin2007/10/12 23:03:20
dont let this discussion put you off ravenclan - the most important thing for our members is that if you find something that you reckon is a bargain or a good buy and want to share it - go for it.
  • ravenclan2007/10/13 00:31:06
Thanks all, it really is food for thought, I can see now how it could be seen as spam, but in this case I still think it was a great buy too .....I will definately be keeping my eye out for more bargains to post.....no strings (or comps LOL!) attached ;)
  • nod2007/10/13 10:13:11
Good to see that you are still keen Ravenclan
The more bargains shared the better :D
