  • bigal2008/07/22 17:25:15
anyone know if extended warranty is available for this?
  • jezzamine2008/07/22 19:07:35
Hot vote from me! We went looking for one on the weekend but the stores were just too busy to get any advice or service, so I hope I can get one of these before they sell out.

Just one thing though, they go on sale Thursday (not tomorrow) :)
  • Keeys2008/07/24 09:43:20
We have also been looking at TV's we only have a small tv in our loungeroom at the moment and its not big enough for the tele confrence stuff we do with Mason so looking to up size...boy oh boy would this be an upsize lol

I won't be near a store till Sat worst luck :( Fingers crossed will be some left. I just want to layby it till I get my end of year money from centrelink. Anyone think there is any chance of there still being some left on Sat? Or am I going to have to waste $25 in petrol and drive up tonight for late night shopping? Oh what to do??? Just seems like such a good deal compared to what else we have seen.
  • wombatblue2008/07/24 11:16:59
oh well, I was there at 9am this morning and they had all sold out - storewide apparently, I was told each store only had 40 of them. good luck to anyone lucky enough to score one!
  • lilpretzel2008/07/24 11:17:30
Ring BigW first keeys to see if they have any stock left ;)

At this price I would say NO but I have my fingers x for you.

edit - What each store had 40 each  and you didn't get one at 9am, I wonder how many staff scored 1, 2 or 3 :whistling:
  • Keeys2008/07/24 12:45:06
Thats so wrong how could they have sold 40 by 9am??

I have a friend going in thisafternoon so have given her my layby card and deposit fingers crossed we get one but it doesn't sound good :(
  • Keeys2008/07/24 12:49:11
Ok I just phoned and got the same sob story all sold out at 9am only 40 per store blah blah :(

Oh well back to the drawing board.
  • wombatblue2008/07/24 12:59:25
I think it's pretty disgusting too - they should put that in the flyer so you know that if you can't make it for opening time then it's a waste of time!
  • Pennycr2008/07/24 13:47:18
Made hubby line up at 8am outside Big W. Apparently there was about 30 or so others lined up to and the race was on when the doors opened. Hubby refused to run and almost snotted someone trying to buy 2 of them hehehe. Anyway he managed to purchase one. I told the guys at work about them and they were keen so rang Big W and they had sold out of them all by 10am and werent getting anymore in. The Woden store only had ordered 28, Gungahlin had 20. Dumb if you ask me, why put so much into an advertising campaign and only have a handful on stock!!

Laybys werent available nor would they hold one for you. Had to be there and buy outright.
  • craftykiwi2008/07/24 14:15:48
Ssh don't let my hubby hear you. He'd love one but we don't need a new TV at the moment so he'll have to wait.
Shame to hear they sold out so quickly but that's always the name of the game it things are super cheap. For all those who were keen remember the prices on these sort of items will continue to drop if you're patient enough to wait, and often when one store has such a sale others soon follow suit.
  • wombatblue2008/07/24 14:36:34
lol at your hubby pennycr, glad he managed to get one :)

Keeys looks like you'd have been out of luck anyway with trying to Layby one so guess it saved you a trip in the end.
And yes, as Lilpretzel says, welcome Pennycr - this is a great forum.
  • Keeys2008/07/24 16:12:42
I could have bought today if needed to I have the cash so to speak just would have made easier to layby but at this price if couldn't laybuy I'd understand. Did it say that it the brochure? I don't have only only knew about it becaue of buckscoop but I didn't read anywhere no laybuy blah blah
  • wombatblue2008/07/24 16:17:11
I have the flyer and can't see any mention of no laybys or no rainchecks so you would have thought they should have done both!
  • Keeys2008/07/24 16:22:22
Interesting thanks for that womatblue I have to go to bigw on Sat so I might pop to the service desk and just ask ..can't hurt ;)
  • coolong2008/07/24 18:32:03
This was clearly a case of baiting. I also tried to buy one today at 9.15 only to be told by the staff at my local store that they only received 3 of them and they sold the moment the store opened, when I asked if it was staff that bought them I was met with a very shifty head nod.

It got interesting when I called head office and the woman tried to tell me that my local store had infact received 30 of them and according to her computer 24 where still in stock (this is 45 mins after I'd left my local store, put a screaming wet toddler back in the car and made my way home). She put me on hold and 'apparently' called the store. She came back to me and said that the manager said that they had all just been sold, in fact there were 24 people standing at checkout one purchasing them (honestly how stupid did she think I was?) I told her that was rubbish, they had a big SOLDOUT sign at the front entrance of the store. Then she backed down, admitted they had only been given a few. I asked her to please find me one somewhere as I'd promised my kids I would buy one, she then told me that a stupid thing to have done and that she couldn't help me further.

Big W are disgusting, they do things like this all the time but I've never been caught out an anything more than an advertised but unavailable videogame before.
  • Keeys2008/07/24 20:04:39
thats awful coolong ...I wonder whats the rules are as to amount they should have in order to advertise in such away surely this is wrong, I'm sure in the past toysRus have been in trouble for similar forms of advertising with so few items. Anyone know?

Does BIG W have rainchecks? or do they offer a similar item if not available I've never looked into it but plan to now ;)
  • Pennycr2008/07/25 08:45:46
    Thanks for the greetings.

I found out about the "no layby" when I rang them. I asked how many were available, if you could layby and if they would put one on hold.

Only found this site by doing a google on the brand and product code AFTER we'd bought it. Was curious to see if it was a decent tv or not. Putting this one on the deck outside so the price suited its purpose. Its a bonus if the tv is a good one as well. We are plasma freaks and this is our fourth!! Werent planning on getting one till closer to summer but couldnt resist this sale! Saved $700!! Cant have too many big tvs I say! Now will be able to lie back in the pool and watch tele all summer in luxury! Thats provided no one steals it!!!
  • Pennycr2008/07/25 08:51:57
I was wondering at the time how many staff put aside a tv for themselves. Only 20-28 available at each store here in canberra so reckon a few went to staff homes. They could have made a killing if they ordered a few more pallets. Why waste so much money on such a big brochure and only sell say less than 90 to a population of over 350,000.

Good thing I reckon is that this will hopefully trigger a quicker fall in the price of big screen tvs. We can only benefit in a sale war of this kind. Bring it on.
  • voteoften2008/07/25 08:54:04
Normally I would be urging the affected people to take some sort of action. While I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from raising a bit or hell, I have to point out that these TVs are coming down in price RAPIDLY. The pacific peso is now worth a greenback, more or less. We will be seeing heaps more of these deals..... My prediction anyway. So don't get too down about it. You may well be buying a 60 inch for this price around Christmas!
  • coolong2008/07/25 09:06:22
voteoften, I do agree with you. Noticed last night that Domayne is advertising a plasma the same size for $998, it's a bit more price wise but may be a better brand. I'm going to ring them in a minute.

For me it is the principal of thing and how Woolworths treats their customers. Frankly, if they can't provide me with a tv within the next few days they've lost me as a customer for good. As a family of 6 I spend over $300 a week on groceries alone in Woolies, not to mention all the stuff we buy at Big W. I will happily switch over to Coles and start buying the same stuff I was buying at Big W (socks, undies, pjs, kids clothes, toys, dvd's etc) at K-Mart. I must admit I've never had an issue getting anything at K-Mart, if they dont have something they've advertised they have always given a raincheck. I might only be one little customer but I do spend thousands and thousands each year in their stores.
  • bluntman2008/07/25 10:30:30
To be fair I think that 40 per store is a reasonable amount. I worked in retail for years, and for such a huge promotion to get 40 is pretty good, especially considering how huge these things are thats a lot of sacrificed storage space, and at almost a grand, its not often that people have budgeted to shell out that amount of cash on such a huge purchase.
  • queenshrew2008/07/25 10:33:26
I think it's the same with Aldi.

First in best dress, I guess... ;)

I'm scared to set foot in Aldi on Thursdays...it's a mad stampede in there....!

  • coolong2008/07/25 10:39:17
Well, just got a call from the ACCC. Big W is being investigated over this advertising campaign and the man I spoke to comfirmed that they had definitely done the wrong thing and they would keep me up to date on what was happening, they've had a lot of complaints.

Just commenting on how oblivious some people are to the issues of climate change. Lets all rush out and stick large screen power hungry lcd's and plasmas in every room while the ice caps melt around us
  • Pennycr2008/07/25 11:25:12
Fair enough too blunt man if I had them all running at the friggin same time!!! Oops better go now and turn all the tvs on, dont want to miss anything!! Damn cant go outside the new one isnt installed yet.
  • Pennycr2008/07/25 11:29:08
Bag on BIG W for releasing so many more into the environment. How many ice caps will this sale melt????

Why are they being investigated by ACCC? Too cheap? Not enough of them??

And no I dont have a 4wd to do the shopping however it would make bringing plasmas home from the shop a lot easier!! Bluntman the environment can be happy that I have a small home!
  • Pennycr2008/07/25 12:00:17
In response to someones comment on page 3 regarding Aldi on Thursdays!!! OMG I experienced that a few weeks ago. Needed some electric blankets for the step kids about to visit from Queensland. They freeze their little butts off down here! Anyway didnt know what time the shop opened so figured Id wait till 9am. Got there a few minutes before and couldnt believe the line up. The doors opened and they were off!!! Racing down the aisle in the tracky dackies and shopping trolleys!!! Figured the only way to slow them down was to tread on the heels of their uggies! This was kinda successful, but the really quick ones were already down there and had formed a baracade of trolleys around all the product bins. Had no chance against these armed warriors! Fortunately there was more blankets than plasmas and the kids enjoyed their stay in Canberra! However damned if Im going anywhere near Aldis on a Thursday morning ever again, I was scared for my life lol!!!

Yes I am having a boring morning at work!
  • voteoften2008/07/25 12:12:09
There are no Aldi's in WA. I am going back to the gold coast next month. I think maybe I will make it a point to sit outside one and watch! Good entertainment!
  • lilpretzel2008/07/25 16:30:38
If BigW did have a good amount in stock, like the 40 per store a member was told when the sale started I think there should be no problems.

I do however have a BIG ISSUE if staff members brought them without lining up like everybody else ;)

If you remember back to Kmart's Plasma sale well I can tell you they had no where near the amount BigW had, all Kmart's in Brisbane only had a minimum of 3-4 per store if that, so I would be more pi$$ed off at them.

BigW took out a full page advertisement in todays paper apologising that they couldn't supply the huge demand for them, that's pretty fair I reckeon :D

At least they had them instock not like some stores (cough cough) Target toy sale :whistling:

Pennycr enjoy your Plasma, your hubby deserves a medal..

Lets move on to the next Big Plasma deal.

LCD screens use less power than the old CRT TV's - so if people go out and buy these then they will consume less power. So your climate change concerns are not relevant. And if people stay at home being entertained maybe they will use less fuel going out to the movies - then again, maybe they drive down to the video store - whatever its hard to say what impact on climate change they have, so lets skip it......LOL

Im probably more concerned with the raw materials that go into these things that end up in dump heaps in a few years when they brake down, cannot be repaired and get junked
  • Keeys2008/07/28 09:46:34
bluntman people always intrest me who take everything to the extreme. Do you eat beef?? one of the biggest contributers to gas's and errosion of soil. Where do you stop what one person thinks is there bit to help others think isn't enough. I don't think having a go at people for their choice is the way to go...incase you haven't noticed people just get their back up ;) If you don't agree with these fine ...personally and I will get shot but I belive earth has already had an ice age and a stage of extreme heat so I feel its a cycle as much as anything. Thats not to say we can't help slow it down etc but I really don't think it will ever be stoped. JMO ;) :)

Well if they break down and can not be repaired, what else can be done with them? Should people who have broken tvs never be allowed to replace them?

Thats fair enough comment although the real issue is the current CRT TV's that are being dumped to make room for these units. - although you might want to update your original line where you said "Lets all rush out and stick large screen POWER HUNGRY lcd's and plasmas in every room while the ice caps melt around us"
  • Pennycr2008/07/29 07:56:37
I dont care what bluntman or any other greenie thinks!!! I LOVE PLASMAS! So get knicked lol!! I dont have a 4wd i have a commodore and its red and so goes much faster than any 4WD to get to plasma sale line up anyday! As for getting them home fortunately we have a friend with a 4WD who will pick it up for us!!!

Dont care, house looks great, there is more room after taking away bulky crts, annnnnnd for the environmentally conscious, I didnt dump the tvs I gave them to less fortunate souls who were still watching crap televisions or for their kids rooms! Recycling! Now what to do with the 50 inch pioneer plasma that died when a wii nunchucker smashed through it is another issue that just breaks my heart. So sad seeing it sitting there in the garage dead! Now thats a tragedy!
  • lilpretzel2008/07/29 09:23:51

I wonder if you can a TV repair shop to buy it off you for parts?
