iPhone for $649.99 ($15.90 express post shipping).

Keep in mind that the WP & OCAU promo price (+$15.90 for overnight delivery) is for orders placed only via WP or OCAU. Limit is 3 units per customer. You need to whim Syntax Err0r directly (same ID on WP & OCAU). The shop price is still $669.94 inc. delivery.

Guess the 3% cashback may not apply if you buy from "Syntax err0r" on Whirlpool, as it wont be tracked as a Buckscoop sale, so in effect the same discount applies 3% of $669 = $20.10 Voted Hot as its the best price so far and matches many US sites after shipping is taken into account.

When it arrives here officially, it will probably be bundled, and a contract termination fee will also apply, so the price might be fairly attractive. Big difference from the first $A1400 "deal", then the more recent $A999 deals.

I'm not 100 % sold on the method - but the price is very very good. I guess last weeks announcement in the UK made it worthwhile just importing a bunch of US models. Thanks Corona.

    That is an awesome price!
I have had a read of the WP thread and it appears people are getting the phones.

    Thanks Corona

Steve Jobs 'reality distortion field' gets people dazzled by the form and not so concerned about function it seems :geek:

he's a real sales meister isnt he. I still cant beleive that a progressive company like apple would bring out the phone equivalent of old technology

Heh! I suppose that was the one thing that he learnt from Bill Gates - feed the desire for new technology and then worry about the need to upgrade when you have them hooked

the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley" is a good exposé of Jobs early career and encounter with Gates

Alright about the 3G but maybe its worth keeping things in perspective.

    1. It's the first model and was released in the US where 3G is still in it's infancy. All the GSM freaks forget that GSM before 3G was limited in its range compared to CDMA. Europe was well suited to GSM as the distances between population centres were small. USA Canada Australia China all have longer distance requirements. Meaning thousands of GSM towers in unpopulated areas. Now 3G is an acceptable alternative for the distance issue, although our farmers now complain its not there yet. Just like the AMPS to CDMA switch - but thats another story. So this leads to Apple deciding which network will give it the most sales, especially in it's home market - The US. If it is successful there as it has been then it tweaks ww interest, makes money and establishes the product, which it has.

    2. 3G eats battery life - so they release a phone, but battery life sucks. Issue here is that the phone will be used for other things as well. Playing movies etc means less talk life. So that needs to be resolved.

    3. After release in the US everyone wanted one (well many did) - hey thats why this deal is here, so pressure is on to ship internationally. Getting 3G up and running takes time. FCC approvals in the US and others. Apple has no track record with phone approvals so this would take longer. So they delay shipping for 3G models and lose momentum or business, or ship 2G (2.5G) grab market share and introduce newer model later when its available.

All that said I don't know if 3G can be added later as a software upgrade.

I for one don't want 3G because at present 3G is expensive to run, but that said having the capability makes sense. My phone is a $69 Nokia on prepaid, that's not 3G capable.
Full 3G coverage is only provided by Telstra and we know how many bargains they offer. It's new has been expensive to install and they will want that paid for ASAP.

So I won't be buying one yet, but just because it doesn't suit me doesn't mean having a go at Apple or Steve. They have picked a target with a strategy thats worked for them and in a crowded market like mobile phones where many big companies have alreay failed its a brilliant start.

I completely agree with this point and it is one that I personally did not take in to account. And it is a very important aspect if you are going to be playing music/movies.
I guess they have learnt from the Nokia N95 experience??

:) - passionate subject huh ozpete.

I only complain about the lack of 3G because I actually have a use for the internet connectivity and I quite like the way Apple design products.

I would have gone straight over to the iPhone if it could give me decent speeds but now its back to thinking Blackberry.

Hello friends. I received my iPhone this morning and am now using it on the Optus network.

Internet does work via GPRS - it's no where near as fast as 3G, but enough to use the phone features - i.e. weather, stock etc.

    Then you have wifi.

Looks like i'll be busy tonight. I'm really really happy with the purchase.

    :)

Corona - Enjoy and I envy you - although not enough to cough up the dough at this time.
