What sort of function would you get out of a mac running both mac os x and windows? I mean would it bog the computer right down to a walking pace?
      • admin17/12/2008
Doesnt it also allow you to run multiple instances of the same OS on the same hardware ?

Whats happened to Vmware? I remember reading a couple of years back how it was revolutionising datacentres and the growth rates on it were going ballistic but then its been largely quiet since then.

I dont know about dual systems on mac with Vmware but bootcamp has been pretty good at the same purpose. Slows things down a bit but not so much as to make things unworkable.

The advantage over the BootCamp approach is they can run simultaneously - you don't have to reboot to change to the other Operating System (I believe you have to do that with BootCamp?).

        Yea - very true actually.

        Parallels has a good rep.

Its a pretty neat idea I reckon (the concept of virtualisation). Very very smart. Imagine they had quite a few uber geeks nutting that out to get it to high end commercial stability.

it's really good for people who want/need to run Windows and Mac OS X apps at the same time... there are various other ways, but VMware Fusion and Parallels are the two commercial packages that most people use...

as long as you have the right amount of RAM, there shouldn't be a big performance hit... (slightly speculative here since i've so far managed to avoid installing Windows on my Mac...)

another big use of virtualization is for testing software in development... each virtual machine is essentially running as a separate system, so for example if one virtual machine crashes, the others should generally be ok...

Yes, and what you do is set up the Windows 'drive' (which is just a file on the Mac) exactly how you want it, all updated and antivirused etc and clean - then make a copy of it. If ever you have a problem with the working one you just chuck it and start with another one. Almost makes Windows bareable :-)

Why are you guys all so anti windows? I've never used anything else so don't know any better but for your average computer user is it really so bad??
