          • fishmonkey09/07/2009
            it's this model: http://us.kensington.com/html/17154.html

a few stores have it for around the $30 mark...
          • admin10/07/2009
            where's that fishmonkey ?
          • fishmonkey10/07/2009

          • admin10/07/2009
ha - how sensitive are they to search terms. I searched both the other day including the model No on the mouse but with different terms and got crapola

Ouch - the price difference between wired and wireless is a whack.
          • NoosieB16/04/2009
I know - but typically with electronic technology, the price will come down in time.
          • fishmonkey16/04/2009
that voucher is a measly 3.5% off their price...

and a cursory Google search turns up at least a dozen stores with prices $20-35 dollars cheaper than this...

Are these worth it? I turn my laptop off when I'm not using it cause it overheats at the moment. Do they make that much difference in a hot climate?
            • admin30/01/2009
Apparently they do. It makes sense that they would. One of the issue's with laptops is dispersing the heat generated by the chip (mostly) and various components. Unlike a desktop which has lots of free space and a large fan a laptop is crammed and has a small(ish) fan. The space for heat sinks is also reduced so they're smaller. The larger spec the machine the greater the heat generated through friction. Chuck on top of that perpetual the drive to make higher spec exist in smaller space. Heat is evil when it comes to chips and circuit boards. Higher heat = greater resistant = less electrons = death (at least temporary death).

Many laptops use the case as a partial mechanism for dispersal and many use the base of the laptop for the fan exhaust. In both cases what the external cooling unit does is to help the process along. Its probably pointless in anything but > 30+ environments and particularly in humid zones where your adding in ambient moisture.

My macbook pro would get to the point of being so hot that it was uncomfortable to rest your wrists on the section before the keyboard and the vent area below the screen would be right on the borderline of too hot to leave your fingers on and that was in temperatures of around 30 but with mild wet season humidity.

I bought an el cheapo one from COTD and have been happy with it!

It was $9.95 delivered. Very basic model, but yes it does make a difference!!! No longer too hot to put on my lap :)

We also bought one to put under our router as our router will heat up too crazily..works a breeze! Great invention...
            • admin30/01/2009
Its quite surprising how much heat digital appliances generate. I had a little wireless card extender that I used to run to pick up remote wifi stations - it used to be on the borderline of too hot to hold and it only had a tiny board and chip in it.
            • jackyblue30/01/2009
sounds like a definative yes! Thanks guys
            • admin30/01/2009
An equally as fast a solution is to go buy a small fan and point it at your computer. The issue is generally as much airflow as anything else.
            • jackyblue31/01/2009
Irony is that while overheating is normally a major problem for me, I'm currently on holidays where it's freezing and find myself using my trusty HP like a hot water bottle to keep me warm. STuff the overheating!

Would be very easy to choose 3 little gadgets to get free shipping! There's a lot of things there that I would call "stocking fillers" for chrissie, not necessarily to put in a stocking, but good ideas to bulk out the pressies :)
