ahhh, i think i've found the answer to my offsite backup conundrum... one of these and a couple of 1TB drives that i can store offsite in rotation...

you can plug any 2.5" or 3.5" SATA hard drive (up to 2TB) into one of these, and access it via USB, FW400/800 or eSATA...

comes with auto-switching 110/240V power supply, and cables for all four connection types...

see the comments for some links to reviews of this unit...

shipping is $20 registered post, Australia-wide...

I reckon these make a lot of sense. Not the cheapest like it says in the review but still a very good option for backing up.

i pretty much stick to quad-interface enclosures these days, for maximum performance and compatibility... for my needs at least, the modest extra cost is worth it...

just in case anyone wants one and have a lower budget http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2 Vantec Dock, 2.5/3.5", USB, esata/FW, $75 and cheaper if you dont use FW (esata much faster) The above link is just an example, this is quite readily available... cheers :)

thanks for that... i guess the main practical differences are that the Voyager Q has FW800 as well, takes drives up to 2TB, is hot swappable, and a bit better build quality... but there certainly are cheaper options out there if your needs and budget are slimmer...

This one is USB and eSata (no firewire) but it works great and only $39... :w00t: http://www.austin.net.au/ProductList/ProductDetail/tabid/104/ProductCode/HD-CASWEME601J/Default.aspx

update: eXpansys, who are quite a big company, seem to have closed their Australian office, although they haven't really changed their website to reflect this... so all orders are actually processed in Hong Kong... after waiting weeks for them to get stock, and watching their delivery time fluctuate madly on their website, i have just cancelled my order with them... i guess i'll pay a bit more to order through a different store...

What do you think?
