Harvey Norman - Acer Iconia Tab A200 for $299 [after cashback]

17 January 2012

New 10 inch, capacitive screen, android tablet just released by Acer, currently only available locally at Harvey Normans. Dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor - so not as good as the quad-core Tegra 3 processor in Asus' Eee Pad Transformer Prime tablet (that costs around the same or more than an iPad), but good enough for most applications.

Currently running Android 'Honeycomb', but Acer have stated that a free upgrade to Android 4.0 (Icecream Sandwich) will be available soon.

Perhaps not the best tablet out there (frankly, it's still hard to beat the iPad) but then again you can get two of these for around the same price as one of the entry level iPads...

$348 but $299 after taking into account the $49 cashback offer [ends 29th Jan.]

I assume this is not 3G? Do they have 3G versions?

No 3G with this... Acer do have them, though.... for example the older ]A100 or the ]501.... But at those prices, frankly I'd go the iPad unless you have a total aversion to IOS. If you require mobile internet access, many people use their 'phone to tether without having to fork out for a separate plan. Another alternative is to get a pocket ]wifi modem - prepaid or postpaid - and use that. The advantage there is that all your various devices ('phones, laptops, iPod touch, etc) can use that for internet access.... as well as talk to each other.... perhaps not quite as convenient individually, but it works and is definitely cost effective if you have a number of mobile devices that support wifi.....

What do you think?
