*expired* JB HiFi - Ubisurfer Netbook for $99 (was $299)

17 June 2010

Spotted this the other day at JB HiFi in Brighton Vic. Could not find it online, might be a single store thing, might be available as a "run out" deal at others, might only have one of them - not sure. But anyhow, they had an Ubisurfer netbook (7inch screen, linux o/s) device for $99. These come with internet access (via GPRS) for a year, 50Gb of online storage, and some other features. The drawback? Well, they include it's slow (both the processor as well as internet access), has a tiny 7inch screen, and the battery will only last for 3 or maybe 4 hours or so. It's also running a cut down linux o/s which means it's not able to run a lot of things.... so don't expect t be able to use it as a full blown notebook or even compare it to a standard netbook.... but for email and basic web browsing it's probably fine.

Pretty much a standard price for these on eBay. You can triple the battery life, quadruple the RAM, (almost) double the screen res and halve the web page loading time for it's RRP with other netbooks.

Absolutely - for the RRP it's a lousy deal. But for $99 it's not too bad for a new device with local warranty from a bricks & mortar shop. It's even better if it does come with the "30 hours/month internet access for a year".... would be interested to see if the sim card can be replaced with a different carrier's one.....

Not true- the ones on ebay come from HK or China. If the machine is faulty, you pay to have it sent back registered post. Many sellers state '12 month warranty' but who knows if they'll be around in 12 months, you'll have no paypal protection and no ability to leave negative feedback so they don't have much incentive to help you either. This one has an Australian warranty, from JB Hifi none the less and additional support from Ubisurfer. The warranty is a huge plus for me. Plus, it comes with the 12 months of access which the ones on ebay dont- could be useful for some even if the access is slow.

I WENT TO THIS STORE TODAY AND THIS PRODUCT IS NOT AVAILABLE. After searching JB HI_FI online store, I suggest that this product is not available at other locations either.

Fair enough - it's been a while since I actually spotted this. Will mark as expired.
