320GB Western Digital MyBook external drive $89

7 December 2008

Netplus Osborne Park (and online) is selling the Western Digital MyBook 320GB external drive for just $89. Stocks are limited so dispatch may be delayed if coming from the distributor rather than Netplus stock. This is a 3.5" based external drive, not the smaller 2.5" (laptop) style of external drive that can run on usb only.

From what I've seen the mybooks are pretty reasonable drives - I was tempted to get one when I first got a 500 gig backup but chose omega instead. Much of a muchness really.

Excuse my ignorance ... but what do you do with an external drive? Is it like a portable one or a backup?

With the smaller, usb powered 2.5" based external drives those are good for being portable and/or for backups. With the 3.5" based external drives, I only use them for backups.

3.5"s are more luggable than portable, cheaper than the 2.5's and generally larger capacity. They are typically powered by their own brick whereas a good chunk of the 2.5's are USB powered.
