Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz 2012

I would like to start with one of the most reasonably priced Penfolds wines in this collection, the 2012 vintage Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, this year sourced from the regions of McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully, Langhorne Creek, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Upper Adelaide. Named after the Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945, the first Bin 28 was produced in 1959. Since then, this ripe and robust warm-climate Shiraz became an iconic multi-region blend maintaining rich flavours typical to Shiraz’ from the Barossa Valley, such as black fruits, mixed spice and liquorice. The acidity is well balanced, tannins are firm with an excellent persistence.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2012

The Bin 389 has built a reputation for Penfolds wines, and is a perfect example of a classic South Australian red. This structured and rich blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon and 46% Shiraz is fruity and oaky, matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of the Grange. Since it’s first release in 1960 the Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has never disappointed any wine lover, and this 2012 vintage will live up to the series standards reaching its maximum potential in 10 – 20 years. However, you should get in early and buy the case now to sample a bottle of this wine featuring a layered palate of black fruits with an impeccable tannin structure and modest aromas of violet.

Penfolds Grange 2010

The Penfolds Grange is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia, and is no doubt one of Australia’s most renowned wines. The Grange is only produced from fully ripe, intensely flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes from multiple regions, such as the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Magill Estate. The result of combining 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the 2010 vintage Grange is an outstanding smoky and fruity wine with integrated tannins and a bouquet of licorice and earth aromas. On the powerful and dense palate you’ll taste flavours of sweet blackberry, dark plum, mulberry, and dark chocolate with notes of spicy oak, rich mocha espresso and underlying roasted chestnut. Scoring a perfect 100 points by wine critics Andrew Caillard, MW, Tyson Stelzer and Nick Stock and with a 99 point Halliday rating, this 2010 Penfolds Grange is a must-have for any wine connoisseur or collector lasting another 60 years or even more.
