This latest offer claims to give you a “$400 Resort Credit”, which you would be forgiven for thinking as sounding too good to be true. At a face value interpretation of what a “resort credit” translates into, you wouldn’t be far wrong in your thinking. That said, a pretty good deal is on offer here.


The deal on offer is available from June 23 to December 19 2014, and is only applicable to new bookings. It is also available only to those who stay a minimum of 5 consecutive nights within those dates. Further, it applies to new bookings only, so if you took advantage of previous deals, like the lower rate room with the $100 discount voucher, you can’t take advantage of this one too. Just how much you might be missing out on, however, depends entirely on how much you agree with the way in which they define “$400 Resort Credit”.


What you have on offer here is not $400 in discounts or credits up front. Rather, in a repeat of a similar deal that they offered last year, you can get credited back up to $400 of what you spent at certain places inside the resort. Excluded from this deal are any purchases from either the tour desk or the day spa. For Paradise Resort, then, “credit” is how you or I might well describe “refund” or “payback”.   


Infuriatingly, it takes you quite a while to find the above information out on the website. The information about what the deal does and does not cover is hidden away in terms and conditions that are not easy to locate. Hiding this away makes it all seem like they are trying to “trick” you, which is strange, as it serves to make the deal seem worse than it is when you do find the conditions. Had they simply said “stay for 5 days with us and we will refund up to $400 of your spending at certain features” it would be an honest presentation of a fair deal, and avoid the disappointment of discovering that your definition of “credit” may well differ from that of Paradise Resort.

Excluding the tour desk and the day spa does not make this a bad deal for families going for at least a week. Far from it, in fact – the many, more family orientated attractions are all included, and from a typical stay getting $400 returned for food and activities is a bonus. Getting it back at the end of the holiday also sees you leaving without entirely empty pockets, which is no bad thing either.


The deal is available throughout the whole of the period mentioned, but a surcharge is applicable during the peak season, which is the Queensland and New South Wales school term break between 19 September and 5 October. This surcharge is not excessive for a time when rooms are in demand, and comes in at about $30 a day more than usual. However, that does push the overall cost of a 5 day stay upwards. Depending on what room you want – and what rooms are available – you could be looking at between $1200 and $2700 for 5 nights.

Whilst the Paradise Resort may come at an above average cost, that old adage you get what you pay for is at the least true. There is no criticising the range of activities on offer, and the place is put together with perfection for family holidays. If the cost of their rooms strikes you as high, you have to bear in mind that staying in other family accommodation in and around the Gold Coast is no cheaper, and does not come with the facilities and options.


Paradise Resort has, as a standard, a good name for fair and reasonable pricing. Any deals they throw our way just make it that bit better. This strategy, however, of making a deal seem misleading might in the end turn out to be counter-productive. Australian consumers, after all, are known for just wanting an upfront, square and straight story of what a deal involved and appreciating it when businesses give them that. Hiding a deal this good behind a, shall we say, “open to interpretation” bit of wording about what exactly it is might put off some from taking advantage.
