Nokia’s Release of the “Affordable Flagship” Lumia 830 Challenges Apple and Samsung

Posted by on November 10, 2014 at 9:40 PM

Windows smartphone fans rejoice, because there is going to be a new release within the Nokia Lumia range, with the launch of their Lumia 830. Tag lined by the company as the ‘affordable flagship’ phone, it will also be compatible with Australia’s super-fast 700MHz spectrum. Things continue to look rosy when we start talking about value for money too.

So if you’re not a Microsoft mobile fan, why should you be interested? Well, two things that might excite you are wireless charging and Pure View imaging that already comes built into the handset, along with Microsoft’s 8.1 denim user interface. As its branded as their flagship handset, I want to explore how this phone compares with its rivals flagship devices, the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

The iPhone 6 is the most expensive costing $869 for their basic 16GB model, while the Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE 4G 16GB generally costs around $599. Comparatively, the Lumia 830 retailed initially for around $579, which is only slightly cheaper than current prices on its closest rival, the Galaxy S5.

One store that you can get a Lumia 830 for less though right now, is Unique Mobiles, who have it on sale for $448.90 with shipping. Although a more thorough price comparison online revealed that the best price with free shipping is actually from DWI for $419. That makes it $180 cheaper than the S5 and $450 cheaper than the iPhone 6.

Bearing these obvious cost savings in mind, let’s take a look at how the Lumia 830′s specifications stack up against the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5 to get an idea of how much value for money overall you’re getting?

To summarise briefly, you are getting about half the technical specifications that you would get if you bought the Samsung S5 for $180 less (or a roughly 30%). Comparatively, where the Lumia 830 beats the iPhone is on its processing power, having a larger screen as well as a higher megapixel camera. In terms of features, the 830′s battery can be changed after deterioration and the external memory can be increased up to 128GB if you buy a microSD card for the phone. So in some ways the limitations you have with an iPhone can be circumvented with the Lumia 830, and all for $450 less than the Apple product.

Nokias Release of the Affordable Flagship Lumia 830 Challenges Apple and Samsung

When looking at these three mobiles next to each other, you need to ask yourself what is important to you in a mobile phone. If price is your number one goal, the Nokia Lumia 830 is most suitable. However, if you base your decision on certain aspects such as camera or processor, the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a 16MP camera, quad-core processor and videoing in 4K, which for the extra $180, is a relatively small price to pay. Apple’s iPhone 6, on the other hand, is twice the price of the Lumia 830 and can feel like a rather a steep ask, especially as the 830 has a better camera, larger memory capability and the same processor. So unless you’re tied into Apple’s eco-system, the value for money is very difficult to justify in this scenario.

It has been announced that the Nokia Lumia 830, is expected to be available on Telstra contracts and Optus Corporate, through Optus business channel as well as a host of other large retailers.

As soon as I have more information about the contract packages that will be available with this phone in Australia, I will update you.
