HotelClub Member Rewards Programme Unravelled

There are so many hotel and travel reward systems out there, that it’s sometimes hard to know what to choose, or what’s going to suit your needs the best. What does suit you best, might also not suit the next person, so it’s valuable to have a good look at your different options. To help you get started, read on to find out the benefits of HotelClub’s Member Rewards programme.

If you listen to the marketing blurb, you’ll find that you get money back on your bookings – up to 7% – and member extras and exclusives. You’ll get exclusive offers and freebies for your stay, and a happiness guarantee – if you don’t love your room, they’ll do their best to change it.

What does it mean in reality though?

Signing up for a HotelClub membership is free. Rewards are calculated on the total cost of a confirmed booking. The rewards you earn from a booking are calculated at a percentage that ranges from four to seven per cent, depending on your membership level. You don’t specifically ‘get’ anything for signing up, but you can start spending your rewards after your first booking.

Members receive Pre-Sale Alerts, which is useful for spontaneous travellers: see a good deal, take it, go. What fun.

You can use your reward points any time of the year, and on any days, and anywhere in the world, though some terms and conditions may apply. You can also book at any time – there’s a 24/7 call centre, once again appealing to spontaneous travellers.

Members also get freebies, for example WiFi, parking, breakfast and accommodation. (This isn’t a given, but a possibility and it does make a difference. We stayed in a hotel recently where the extras added up to the price of a night’s accommodation!)

In order to earn rewards, you need to book in to your account on the website, and then place your booking – your rewards will be calculated, as will your cashback.

Your membership level is determined by the number of completed bookings in a 24 month period. Less than two bookings in a 24 month period will see you as a Silver Member with 4% back on every booking, 2 – 5 bookings will get you 5% back and Gold Membership and 6 or more bookings a Platinum member makes, with the aforementioned 7% cash back.HotelClub Member Rewards Programme Unravelled

Your unused points will expire after 24 months too, but if you’re unable to use them, you can purchase travel or accommodation which you can then pass on to a friend or family member. Similar holiday reward programs generally only allow you to transfer to another member, if at all.

Finally, HotelClub offer a lowest price guarantee, so if you see the same offer, after taxes and fees, for a lower price elsewhere, within 24 hours, you can email the information to them and they will refund the difference.

That’s great, but really plays in their favour. Your only benefit for choosing to book through HotelClub rather than the other guy, is the fact that you’re still collecting points at the lower rate rather than not collecting points with the other guy at all (assuming you’re not.) The benefit to them is greater, because you book through them, rather than their better priced competitor, leaving all the responsibility for finding the best rate to you and basically taking advantage of anyone who doesn’t do their research.

As with all loyalty and reward schemes, they’re fabulous, because free stuff is fabulous, but only as long as you collect your points based on purchasing decisions you were planning to make in the first place.

There aren’t currently any voucher codes for HotelClub on Buckscoop, but you can look through the expired offers to see the kind of deals you’ll find from time to time, and then you’ll know where to keep an eye for the next code!

That’s a great point, which applies elsewhere as well. I’ve never understood much of the attraction of these guarantee schemes (there are limited situations, such as having a gift card). But generally, it’s just extra overhead for the customer, and isn’t actually a sales point. In the worst cases the customer loses out, as the offer may have finished/sold out by the time you try to redeem it. Often you need to waste at least half an hour or so while the staff member finds out what you’re requesting, then checks it out, then gets a manager to approve and override the price. Just if you’re in certain circumstances it may be something useful to try to take advantage of.
