Food is one of those things you either love, or you love in my opinion. We all enjoy eating, but there is nothing worse than spending money on good food and having it spoil because we didn’t look after it properly. Think back to how many bananas, for example, have gone off that you bought, or the amount of salad that has perished before you could eat it all. Collectively, these little bits of food that continuously get thrown away will certainly add up over the years costing you thousands over time.
Rather than waste food for no reason, I wanted to help you save money by avoiding these wasteful habits. But instead of getting you to monitor your food every day, however, to ensure that they aren’t perishing needlessly, here are a collection of clever food hacks to help with this. These little tricks will ensure that you preserve food for longer so that you don’t waste as much money in the future.
If you wrap the crown of your bananas (i.e. the top part that connects the bunch) with some cling film, then you can reduce the amount of time that it takes for them to go off. Theoretically, bananas should last 3-5 days longer than they normally do using this hack. It’s especially helpful if you buy organic bananas.
If you eat plenty of meat at home then chicken will surely be one of your staple foods. Always buy chicken in family packs and put the remaining breasts into sealable bags with marinade and freeze them. This is the best way to stop them spoiling in the fridge if you don’t plan on eating chicken again for a few days. The marinade will also help flavour the chicken whilst you wait.
Avocados are not cheap so it’s really frustrating when you get home and cut one open to find a half-brown sludge inside, ending up straight in the bin. The best way to tell if your avocado is ripe is by checking its ‘belly button’. At the base of the avocado you’ll find the part that connected it to where it grew from. Remove this to see the colour inside and then use the chart below to establish exactly how ripe it is.
If you like to buy fresh herbs then don’t let them perish for the sake of not caring. By putting them in the microwave you can dry them out completely for use at a later date. You want to do this before they begin to wilt in order to preserve their colour, flavour and appearance. When placing them in the microwave, put the herbs onto a paper towel and then put another paper towel on top to cover to help absorb all moisture.
If your milk is about to expire and you don’t want to have to throw it away, try this incredibly tasty hack. Pour the milk into ice cube trays along with some crushed Oreos or cookies of your choice and place in the freezer. These cookie and milk ice cubes will make a delicious addition to your morning coffee.
If you buy big bunches of herbs then a great way to preserve them for longer is to put them in a glass of water, cover the entire plant in a plastic bag, place an elastic band around the glass and put it in the fridge. This process helps lock in moisture and reduce the rate at which it will perish.
Broccoli, lettuce and celery are part of a healthy diet, but being in the fridge can sometimes mean that they spoil slightly. The best way to extend their life is to wrap them in tin foil to lock in that important moisture, with the result being that they should remain crisp for 4 weeks or more in the fridge.
It certainly comes with less preservatives and personally I would choose brown sugar over white any day, but it’s annoying when it goes rock solid. To prevent this all you have to do is throw in a couple of marshmallows when storing to prevent that from happening again.
Storing your ice-cream tub inside a sealable bag will prevent it from going rock hard. Doing so will also keep it soft so it doesn’t bend your spoon either.
