Bargain on Mobile Data as Coles and Target Offer 3GB + USB Modem (Vodafone) for Just $9

Data plans are always a big discussion topic especially when you know someone who’s paying much more than you and they think they are on a good deal. It’s disconcerting sometimes to think that they are oblivious to a better deal and then defend their company regardless of what you are telling them about yours.

Don’t blame them, it’s the big companies and their misconceiving marketing which persuade people into thinking this way. A perfect example of this is Optus’ recent “New Years treat” which claims that $30 per month for 1.5GB is a good deal. Granted there’s some calling and SMS credited included in that, but with so many people now primarily focused on finding cheap mobile data to use, there are certainly much better deals around than this. For instance, how does $9 for 3GB of mobile data plus a USB modem sound? Keep reading to find out more.

Data is big business and Australians are consuming more data than ever before. Through out New Year’s Eve and through to New Year’s day for example, Optus customers used 385 terabytes of data via sim-cards. This represents an increase of 55% from the previous year.

Having data is becoming increasingly prominent in our daily lifestyles and for people constantly on the go it’s increasingly important. Most mobile providers do not allow Wi-Fi hot spotting from their mobile data to other devices, so people travelling around Australia usually have to resort to 3G or 4G USB dongles to stay connected to the Internet. A quick scan of the market showed that there were a few similarities between these devices, Optus, Telstra and Vodafone for example being the big players in the market selling pre-paid dongles with pre-determined amounts of data on them which are activated once the device is.

Target or Coles are running a superb deal on Vodafone USB modem’s + 3GB data at the moment. Besides the cheap price tag of just $9, what’s also very appealing is the fact that the data you buy with the stick has no expiry date. So it’s only once you activate the sim that your 30 day validity period kicks in to consume the 3GB of data. However, if you plan on travelling a few times during the course of a year, you could potentially buy a dongle for each month that you are away and the cost works out at only $3.33 per 1GB. Seldom does data come so cheap, not to mention that the USB modem is included in the price as well. The sim operates on Vodafone’s 4G network but the modem’s capacity is 3G+ so as long as you have good signal, you shouldn’t have any issues with speed.

So when I started comparing this deal with others on the market, I was quite surprised to find such a large price difference. I drafted the table below to represent the different prices and how much data was provided with each one.

So, if for example you are interested in buying a dongle for your next business trip, make sure you head over to either Coles or Target soon in order to purchase one or more of these devices. The Coles deal started yesterday, 7th of January, and currently there is no expiry date. Target’s deal kicked off today. If you would like an inside tip, most stores have been told to sell only one item per customer, however, discussions online have indicate that most stores to not adhere to this rule. Some store managers are said to have knowingly told staff to ignore the stipulation, selling as many as the customer requests. These scenarios have been on a case-by-case basis, but who knows, you may just be lucky enough to encounter this down at your own local store.

Going back to the table above, it’s rather worrying to think about the disparity in pricing between retailers if you didn’t know where to get your data/modems from. Buying four from Coles, for example, will cost you $36 for 12GB of data. Buying a similar device and the same amount of data from gotalk on the other hand, would cost you $719.40. Pretty crazy really.

On a final note, for any of you who aren’t already aware, another common mobile data deal that we see quite regularly is Telstra’s “$30 prepaid starter kit” offers where they only cost $15. Not only will you receive 3GB of data along with calling/sms credit, but they’re also a great way to get discounts on Google Play content for your Android device. Since Google Play gift cards don’t go on sale nearly as often as iTunes cards, this is one of the few ways to purchase apps and games at 50% off. Simply insert the sim into your Android tablet or phone and when you go to make a purchase, you’ll see your Telstra credit appear as one of the possible payment options thanks to an agreement Telstra struck with Google.

Lucky if you are the one who nabs then.

Unlucky if you are the many more who miss out because they’ve already been nabbed…
