Posted by on March 14, 2016 at 8:20 AM

It is officially available for pre-order and if you are planning on buying the new Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge, then you might want to compare which providers have the best plans available. There is no doubt the Samsung flagship device is expensive, so saving money on a mobile plan can really help the cause. As of Friday last week, the major telcos in Australia got their hands on the new device but which plan’s price best suits your pocket?

A Breakdown of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Mobile Contract Plans in Australia

In this post I’ll give you a breakdown of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge plans available from the big 4 telcos to give you all the information you need to make the best value for money decision.

If you would like to review the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge specifications then you can read my recent article for more information and details about the phone’s new features. Buying the Samsung Galaxy S7 in Australia will cost you $1,149 whereas the Galaxy S7 Edge will cost slightly more at $1,249.

Of course there may be cheaper deals on the Buckscoop deals board from retailers such as Kogan or Mobileciti, however this is the base price that the phones are being launched at in Australia. Those of you uninterested in locking yourself into a contract may find that buying the phone outright will prove better value for money over time. Contracts tend to be bad value for money once they start rolling, but if you are going to head down this route then have a look below at what each of the main telcos are charging for plans which include Samsung’s latest flagship device.

Telstra A Breakdown of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Mobile Contract Plans in Australia

Australia’s largest Telco company, Telstra is releasing the Samsung Galaxy S7 on 24-month contract which start at $79 per month. If you want to get your hands on the S7 Edge then it comes at a slightly higher price of $86 per month. Telstra follow their usual business strategy and price their plans a bit higher than the competition, however they do give away slightly more data in return.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Plans
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$79 $550 standard talk credit, unlimited text 1GB $1896
$84 $1000 standard talk credit, unlimited text 2.5GB $2016
$99 Unlimited standard talk and text 6GB $2376
$135 Unlimited standard talk and text, $150 international calls 15GB $3240

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Plans
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$86 $550 standard talk credit, unlimited text 1GB $2064
$91 $1000 standard talk credit, unlimited text 2.5GB $2184
$105 Unlimited standard talk and text 6GB $2520
$141 Unlimited standard talk and text, $150 international calls 15GB $3384

Looking at the plans above the best value for money from Telstra is the $99 (S7) or $105 (S7 Edge) option. The average mobile customer should be happy with 6GB of data per month but in all honesty if you are here looking to save money then none of the Telstra plans offer particularly great value. Most people who choose Telstra do so primarily due to the reliability of the network.

Optus

A Breakdown of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Mobile Contract Plans in Australia

Optus undercut Telstra by setting their cheapest plan for the Galaxy S7 at $64 per month, whilst the S7 Edge is only $69. The tradeoff though is that when it comes to data allowances, both plans offer a measly 500MB which doesn’t give you good value for money (unless you’re somebody who really doesn’t use much data each month).

Samsung Galaxy S7
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$64 Unlimited talk, unlimited text 500MB $1536
$76 Unlimited talk, unlimited text, 150 international calls 3GB $1824
$85 Unlimited talk, unlimited text, 300 international calls 6GB (+ bonus 2GB) $2040
$100 Unlimited talk, unlimited text, 400 international calls 10GB (+ bonus 2GB) $2400
$100 ($30 off) Unlimited talk, unlimited text, unlimited international calls 18GB $2400

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$71 Unlimited talk, unlimited text 500MB $1704
$83 Unlimited talk, unlimited text, 150 international calls 3GB $1992
$92 Unlimited talk, unlimited text, 300 international calls 6GB (+ bonus 2GB) $2208
$104 Unlimited talk, unlimited text, 400 international calls 10GB (+ bonus 2GB) $2496
$100 ($30 off) Unlimited talk, unlimited text, unlimited international calls 18GB $2400

Optus plans fair slightly better with regards to value for money against Telstra and if you have the cash available then the $100 Galaxy S7 Edge option with the $30 discount is the best value option available currently. Compare the 18GB of the discounted plan against the 12GB plan and it actually works out $4 cheaper per month for more data.

Virgin Mobile

A Breakdown of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Mobile Contract Plans in Australia

Virgin are the next peg down with regards to having the cheapest plans available. The most affordable Virgin has to offer on the Samsung Galaxy S7 range is $60 for standard version and $65 per month for the Edge, while the most expensive plan tops out at $130 per month for both models. If you believe Virgin can offer you the coverage that you need and you’re considering changing over from your current provider, they it’s worth knowing that they also reward new customers with generous data allowances for the first 3 months.

Samsung Galaxy S7
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$60 $300 standard talk and text credit 300MB $1410
$65 Unlimited standard talk and text, $50 international calls 500MB (+ bonus 600MB) $1560
$70 Unlimited standard talk and text, $100 international calls 1GB (+ bonus 2GB) $70
$75 Unlimited standard talk and text, $200 international calls 3GB (+ bonus 4GB) $1680
$85 Unlimited standard talk and text, $300 international calls 6GB (+ bonus 8GB) $2040
$100 Unlimited standard talk and text, $300 international calls 10GB (+ bonus 13GB) $2400
$130 Unlimited standard talk and text, $500 international calls 15GB (+ bonus 21GB) $3120

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$65 $300 standard talk and text credit 300MB $1560
$70 Unlimited standard talk and text, $50 international calls 500MB (+ bonus 600MB) $1680
$75 Unlimited standard talk and text, $100 international calls 1GB (+ bonus 2GB) $1800
$80 Unlimited standard talk and text, $200 international calls 3GB data (+ bonus 4GB) $1920
$91 Unlimited standard talk and text, $300 international calls 6GB (+ bonus 8GB) $2184
$104 Unlimited standard talk and text, $300 international calls 10GB (+ bonus 13GB) $2496
$130 Unlimited standard talk and text, $500 international calls 15GB (+ bonus 21GB) $3120

In Buckscoop’s opinion the best value for money deal has to be the $85 / $91 per month plan (S7 / Edge), especially if you are eligible for the 3 months of extra data allowance when switching to Virgin.

Vodafone A Breakdown of Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge Mobile Contract Plans in Australia Vodafone’s starting price for the Samsung flagship device is that little bit higher at $75 per month and the minimum for the S7 Edge is $83. Unfortunately, both of these plans come with a poxy 500MB of data though which defeats the entire point of having such a sophisticated smart phone. The telco’s most expensive plan will cost $130 per month but at least they’re offering unlimited data for the first two months as a gesture of good will.

Samsung Galaxy S7
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$75 Unlimited talk and text credit 500MB $1800
$80 Unlimited standard talk and text, 120 minutes international calls 3GB $1920
$77 Unlimited standard talk and text 6GB $1848
$88 Unlimited standard talk, text and international calls 8GB $2112
$105 Unlimited standard talk, text and international calls 12GB $2520
$130 Unlimited standard talk, text and international calls 20GB $3120

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Plan Plan Features Data Minimum Total Cost
$83 Unlimited talk and text credit 500MB $1800
$95 Unlimited standard talk and text, 120 minutes international calls 3GB $2280
$90 Unlimited standard talk and text 6GB $2328
$95 Unlimited standard talk, text and international calls 8GB $2376
$111 Unlimited standard talk, text and international calls 12GB $2664
$133 Unlimited standard talk, text and international calls 20GB $3192

There is no hiding the fact that Vodafone’s pricing is the most expensive compared to all other Telcos here with some of the plans actually costing more than Telstra, which is unexpected. The best option in our opinion is the $88 or $95 plans although compared to what you get from the other three companies for the same money, Vodafone take themselves out of the race and seem to be relying solely on customer loyalty or other tie-in mechanisms.

In Summary

Ultimately these plans will only be of use to you if you can stomach the idea of spending $90 – $100 per month on a phone bill simply to have the latest Samsung device. Optus with their discounted $100 plan for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is the best deal out of the bunch because of its unlimited international calls and 18GB of data. If you are here on a budget looking for a great plan then unfortunately you wont find one. The best budget option for getting the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge is to buy the phone and find a more competitive BYO device plan. The cheapest plan for the budget hunters is a $60 per month plan from Virgin, however with 300MB of data it’s rendered practically useless.
